  • would appericate some advice(long)

first off I appologise in advance for my spelling, I have a bit of a learning disibility, I'm well spoken and smart-I just cant spell. So sorry.

I live in America(most of the time-not my favourtie place) I was in Zim regularly for a while. I have played pool since 85 on 9' tables. I'm a good solid player with a very good stroke, fundmentals, knowlege of english, position, patterns for all pool games. I have alot of experience gambling, not much tournment play(just dont like tournments). Overall I'm a well seasoned player for many years and still improving.

Myu snooker background was many years ago, I started on a 10' american snooker table with very tight pockets, I played on it for years but didnt learn much about proper snooker, Later on I moved and there was a 12' snooker table I played on and with out much knowlege of break building and snooker I managed a high break of 53 or 56-I cant remember, Had alot in the 40's. I moved and sadly played little snooker since then that was in 89.

Since then I have become a much better pool player. I have also studied snooker alot the past few years, I was living in Germany and watching as much as possible in Euro Sport and now Youtube. Because of my pool experience devloping reds and break building this way is second nature to me, I can see the patterns before the commentators talk about them(I mention this so you understand my level of play, i'm not bragging).

I just finally after waiting what seemed a lifetime got my Riley steel block tournment snooker table installed in my house, with 6411??? cloth on it, Its fast, wow. What a table, I have never played on such a wonderful table. I imported it from the UK with the help of a friend. I have played on it for only 30 minutes since the fitters left,

Right now I'm playing pool as good as ever, I went to play snooker with my pool stance and good pool fundmentals and was potting balls at a pretty low standard considering my abilities. I then attempted a proper snooker stance and as awakward as I felt I potted balls at a much higher standard, however my stance is not correct, its almost correct-not good enough. I dont want to learn bad habit and have to correct them, I made that mistake in pool and because of that I'm not the player I could be. Again my stroke is great, I pause at the top, follow through the white, speed control is prety good considering I'm not accustomed to the cloth and small balls.

Thats my story, I have the table, experience, money and time for coaching. I feel it is very important to start out right now before I devlop bad habits because I do have alot of things working for me-a good stroke, experience, knowlege of side spin, devloping reds, pattens, etc. But my stance is terrible.

So my question: sorry to be so long, but this is is important, I put alot of effort into doing what ever I do the right wayh, I dont over think things or waste time. I feel that with help I will be able to have a high break of 80 and perhaps 90 in my life-I'm 42. To get there I had to buy a table now I need coaching. Where is the best place to go, fishing etc, holiday style coaching sounds fun but is it the most effective? or somewhere else?? where else???

Last question, Should I not play not very much until I get a coach/instruction so I dont devlop bad habits???

I want to do things right because I want to become the best player I can, I'm not naturally talanted but am not afraid of hard work. I love snooker more than any other cue sport. Shame we dont have it in America(I'm moving from here with in 5 years anyways when I retire). I have time, money drive and a table. Just need advice.

thank you very much for reading this and if anyone is in vegas your more than welcome to come by and play.

    Best,
    eric

OK, Eric. Do you mean where can you travel to so you can get coaching? I recommend the World Snooker Academy. I can see you have the right attitude to improve. I don't think you should stop playing until you get coaching, just try to play as you think the coach would teach you if you know what I mean. Also, are you looking for coaching books/DVDs on snooker?

Tried to watch coaching videos from Youtube, they are very helpful and get a coach as soon as possible, coz diffirent cueing/stance will have different impact on cue ball control. correct cue action is the most important part of the snooker.

Dell Hill's snooker farm is the place for you, seeing as you mentioned fishing. Dell coaches, or has coached many great players and he is a nice guy.

As 1lawyer mentioned, Del snooker farm is a good place to go if you dont mind travelling. To me this would be a dream place to spend the week.

Fergal O'Brien and Frank Callan's websites have lots of good advice.
I think you should try to work on your stroke, to get a good solid fundamental, before you do anything else. Potting the blue into the corner is a good exercies. You can try to see how many you can pot out of ten, and try to find out what you are doing wrong.
Getting a coach is good but it depends on who you go to. You should get a snooker coach, not a 9 ball coach in my opinion.
If you can afford it, go to the UK, and learn the game the right way. Snooker acedamy, Dell Hill, FranK Gallan, Terry Griffith...etc and practice 5+ hours a day. I am sure you will become the best player you can be if you have the committment and dedication.
            Best wishes.
