  • something seems to be working

    hi everyone,

just thought id add this post. i may update this regularly as a blog. feel free to respond or read through. OR.... Neither

well to begin with. i had major problems in my game mainly because i didnt enjoy practicing. i would change cue action and all sorts.

well.. as simple as it sounds i would like to thank rocketroy. i now set myself goals as to what i want to do. and im beginning to reach some kind of consistancy where as before, i would just pot and pot.

mainly i am doing only line-ups simply because i want to achieve something in this before moving on. i would like to make 100+ or clear before moving deeply into something else.

several months ago, my highest was 53 in line-ups. with no practice i only started my routine of going regularly last saturday. and straight away i was suprised to knock in a 40 and 50. although this wasnt impressive as i did this in about 3 hours!!!

well things happened and my cue action changed itself. now feeling more comfortable, within 2 days of solid practice (7 hours per day) my arm is now cueing quicker and i can recognise the angle more accurately when down on the shot.

yesterday in my first 7 hour session, i had about 2 50s, several 40s, several 30s and a 60!!. so i already beat my record.

and today and had MORE 30s, 40s, 50s, and got 61. so something seems to be going right, although i do miss silly shots and get an 8 break lol.

please feel free to use this to compare your sessions of snooker and the progress you are making in your game.

    THANK YOU!!
    Nicholas

My personal opinion is that you should not do only lineups or at least don't go for any red...
I am the best example of a player that has been destroyed by lineup..
I can do several centuries in a day and have 50points average for hours in lineup but cant go beyond 20 in a frame...
I have become a lineup player that can beat almost anyone here in that but my match game did not have any ipmorovement..

There are some variations of line up that make it much more usefull...

1)One is potting the reds in order starting with the red on the back cushion and finish with the red nearest the blue...

2)Potting any red but with same colour(black, pink)

3)Doing the lineup without touching the cushion with the white..

These may seem difficult in the beginning but will make you a better player in frames too..

Another very usefull excersice which i am sure you will know is clearing the colours and going again from black to yellow to make another clearence and so on..

I think the line-up is a good exercise when practising, but solo practise should not all be about the line-up. Yes there are variations to the line up in terms of where you place the reds, the order you pot them and which colours to go for - but at the end of the day it is just one part.
If you are going to become a better player then safety play is an important part of the game - this is difficult to practise on your own, but you can always set the balls up to recreate a situation in which you have to play safe and experiment with which shot to get the best out of the situation.
I am sure there are coaching sites that give a better insight (not been on any snooker ones myself).

Very true that the line-up ONLY isnt the BEST solo practice but for confidence can work wonders. Record all your breaks over 40 thai this is what I do and also record out of ten all your other routines. Good to hear your playing well and obviously imroving. I done line-up at the end of a session last week for 65 minutes and recorded 11 breaks 40-49 and a 53, 54 and 59 all in an hour which was a great way to end my session. You can do the same. Keep going mate.

              interesting opinions

I started my snooker career by doing line ups on a daily basis, along with clearing the colours, long blues and scattering the reds and trying to clear up.

In the beginning i would just float the cue ball around on the line up and this worked wonders for my confidence as i was uilding bigger breaks and made me feel at ease when on for a big break etc. This proved successful and within 18months i made my 1st century in serious frame play against an oponent.

However, as my standard progressed i found the line up less productive. I would make loads of centuries and many line up 147s but found my progress in real terms had stopped.

Like in previous replies, lay the line up out differently and depending on your standard play for a specific red. Using either the pink or blue is good too.

These days to get my game in good form i concentrate on a billiard style routine. Where i pot the black twice off its spot then the blue off it's spot then the black twice and so on......its got everything.

The allows me to get my cue arm really going, where in the line up its all close up stuff
