  • Distance between bridge and tip

What can be considered an ideal distance between your bridge and the tip of your cue (cue-ball)?

    Personal preference 4-10 inches usually.

When ordering my cue, I called Parris cues to ask about how I'd go about measuring my ideal cue size. Their recommendation was that after you were set you should have about 12in between your bridge and the cue ball.

One of our top Australian coach's says that if you put the white ball just in front of the brown spot, your bridge should be on the bottom of the "D".

I don't get it, there is no recommended distance between bridge and cue tip, it's whatever feels comfortable and it will vary drastically depending on the shot you are playing and the positioning of the balls when you get down to the table. If you're playing the cue ball tight off the baulk cush then chances are you will be sliding the cue down the side of your index finger and as you draw the cue back the tip will be behind the tip of your finger. In that situation you'd be into negative bridge distance.

ye but there is some normal range of distance I think. Of course it depends on the shot, but if the distance is too big it's harder to cue straight, and if the distance is too short it's hard to do a proper backswing.

Some players like Neil Robertson and Ryan Day I ahve noticed have quite a short bridge on their normal shots, is it just the camera angles?

Don't mind my ugly cue action, I've been working on that lately =)
I think my bridge is too short, anyone else shares that thought?

                  I've heard that too Pearce.
It does seem a comfortable general distance but variations of cuing distance from off the rail or over balls calls for flexibilty on that.

                    hey wimm

nice video mate with the exception of a pause your cue action is very sound. I wouldve been rolling through for the pink rather than the black that you missed as you had less to do with the cueball but nice enough keep going mate looking good.

Clive Everton says in his book "Snooker: Technique, Tactics, Training" that the optimum distance between bridge hand and cue ball is between 6-8".

Thanks, I recorded myself to see what I could improve. So right now I do have a nice pause.

hi Wimm, nice going there mate! One thing I've noticed was when you were facing the camera with your back. Your wrist and elbow werent in line. That is, your wrist was close to your hip while the elbow was sticking out outwards. Keep up with the good work mate!

The ideal distance between the tips of the fingers and the cue ball (as opposed to the 'v' between thumb and first finger and cue ball) is one entire hand's length. This is the average most pro's use. Any shorter, and it is harder to aim the ball. Any longer and it is difficult to deliver the cue accurately. Experiment to find your optimum!!!

Don't forget about the stance. I've seen people in clubs in both legs bent, both legs braced straight, the feet very close, the feet 2 feet apart etc.
