  • Thoughts whilst playing

Another kid I coach says that he plays better when playing each and every shot in his head pretending that Willie Thorne is commentating on his game!

Sounds weird I know but does anyone else play like this?

For me the thought of Willie in my head at all times is just too scary but im curious to find out if anyone else does this?

I've got enough voices in my head already when I play. I don't need to be inventing any new ones.

I have to say i went through a phase once of where in my mind i was being commentated on my every shot, but i'm delighted to say it wasn't Willie Thorne haha. I found it made me try harder on every shot, plus helped my concentration levels that much more.

If it helps your pupil then all well & good to him..

I think that is a good thing for the young player - and for more players every once in a while.

At a not so high standard (yet), or with too easy shots (just slam it in), or when everything else is just flowing (no matter what I do, I can pot everything anyway), there's always the risk of not being careful enough about the cueball position.

If you imagine Willie Thorne commentating as he does in his well know 147 learning video on youtube, than that's exactly the thing that helps:

He says where the cueball has to land: "just run through, easy (if so...), but JUST make sure to end up high/low on black."

If there is only ONE thing that is important on an otherwise easy pot - like the slight difference of stopping the cueball 5cm earlier or 10cm later - do take care of it.

Especially with the young player that is a good thing for him to do, as it will make him think ahead and learn to play with a plan in his mind.

I don't think imagining Willie saying "that wasn't the bad shot, it was the one before" would help my game a lot! Now, how many people will start to imagine him involuntary after reading this thread?!

to be honest: I didn't want to stress out the point it HAS to be WT's voice...

but just the fact that "planning ahead" can be better once you start thinking about "what would someone else expect me to do", given the fact I could see and play the right shot here. And with 'someone else' I mean a better/pro player.

I tried it last night and I must admit it does make you not want to take on the more reckless shots as Willie would be annoyed at me.

Give it a go whats the worst that can happen? Youll hear your favourite commentator in your head lol. Get him to say your name it becomes more personal to you that way.

Right their coming to take me away so im off......

I was happy enough to have Clive Everton's voice in my head as he reminds me a bit of my old headmaster with whom i didn't want to disappoint! Probably will give it another go come Thursday..

                          You're right mate!

Well, not to get too primeval about it... but way back when, even before farming or McDonald's,
people were pretty much either hunters or gatherers.
In snooker some people methodically harvest their high breaks... but not Alex.
He is certainly a hunter. As such, he probably does what he does thoughtlessly...
not stupidly or carelesslessly at all, in fact... the opposite... by INSTINCT.
Alex is the bi-polar opposite of Steve Davis, just like ROS is.
And that's one reason why people have a love/hate adulation for both.
If I were to come up with a "picture" of Alex "The Hunter" Higgins it might be this...

by the wild Italian artist Guiseppe Archimboldo...

Off topic but you started it. This whole Jordan-Andre business is just a soap opera and it is scripted. The whole summer the tabloids and celeb magazines will be covering the every move of both. They will both give interviews and photo shoots for loads of money. They will slag each other off. They will seem to go on a few dates with other people. Then just as the women of this country get bored they will announce reconcilation talks. Will they or won't they get back together. That will go on for a few more weeks. Then they will get back together. They will then re-do their wedding vows. They will then make millions from the Hello/OK/Heat magazine pictures and an ITV series that has been filming the whole thing. It is total BS.
