Quarter ball black bounce off the top cushion or just off full ball and stun/screw

Thats it simply. Whats your preferred way of playing the black on to your next red?

The quarter ball off the cushion or just below full ball and stun/screw up for choice of reds?

Ive noticed that my preference is for the stun shot. I guess it is an easier shot. I have no problems whatsoever potting a quarter ball black but when I think about where I want the white to finish ie stun it back for red into same pocket, run it round for a red on the other side, maybe 50% of the time I make a pig's ear of it.

More practice is needed on that me thinks

I don't really like using a cushion when playing around the Black spot ........... unless it is neccessary

If it is possible I find it's always best to leave the white just below to stun/screw up for a red. However, sometimes it is best to guarante leaving an angle to get on to the next red by finishing high.

because my natural game is always play with screw or drag,even
on my follow thru shots

Interesting so many people prefer to stay low on the black for the stun/screw up. I mean obviously it is my preference too but I've been trying to incorporate finishing top side of the black to improve my game and give me more options.

As stated sometimes you HAVE to finish top side and thats fine, but I guess what Im asking is: with a much smaller margin for position playing low on the black do you think its a dangerous habit to incorporate into your game?

in most cases I would say that is better to stay high on the black , 1/2 or 3/4 ball contact point , this way you can get the cue to anywhere on the table much easier . now , if you are right handed , staying high on the black on the right side of the table looking from the baulk end down to black area ) is a little trickier , because if you get too high you must use a rest , so there's an area on that side of the table that's comfortable , and slightly off that your not , it's the same for a left handed player but from the other side of the table . you should prcitce breaking the pack from all these positions including a back cut (low on the black ) but practice hitting the pack , at each corner , and sending the cue ball into the middle of the pack . hitting the center of the pack is good IF some of the reds are open or if there's a gap to send the white into , this will split them , if there tight , you usally end up frozen to the back of the pack with no shot on ...later Joe

That's exactly what my game is like... so that answers the question of my favourite way of playing the position after the black

Its very much a personal choice. That top cushion is very important in break building but just remember that any trace of side used to aide in positional play will make the pot harder.

I agree with both those statements, hence why Im practicing so much of this just now. You do need to be a percentage play break builder and second point about the side is also very true.

I would practice blacks off the spot as much as possible as their importance is crucial. Also, plain ball should be used wherever possible.
