  • Cue action - Again

    Hi,
I've done the exercise successfully, plenty of times... from the baulk line, over the blue pink and black spots and back to the tip. I've also cued along the baulk line and seen that when forward, my cue covers the baulk line completely. I've done another exercise by placing the spider along the length of the table such that the legs of the spider are over the pink spot. Then I strike the ball over the spots such that it rolls thru the legs, bounces off the cushion, comes thru the legs back on to the tip. (This one is from Nick Barrow's DVDs)
It works well in practise, but in a game, while attempting long shots, as soon as the cue ball leaves the tip, I know its not going where I want it to go. There is obviously some side spin. I'm confident sighting is not the problem. It's the cue action.
My question is, are there any other exercises to improve cue action.

you already DID a lot of cue action training - but either still not enough (while practicing cue action is NEVER enough... ), or you didn't recognize at least one major error you do that makes the ball leave the line of aim.

or then, you just AIM improperly, as you miss as soon as you attemp a pot, while feeling fine to send the cue ball through the spider's legs.

    test the following exercice:
place the cueball practically on brown spot (not IN the spot, if there's a little hole where the brown normally lies), a few centimeters towards the blue spot.
place the blue on its spot.
then play a dead straight shot onto the blue. try to stop the cueball dead at contact, for a perfect stop shot.

if everything was executed perfectly, the blue must roll up an down the table, over the spots, and hit the cueball on its way back.

    - if you miss the cueball with the blue rebounding, you aiming/cueing wasn't good enough.
    - you can vary difficulty by starting with the cue ball very close to the blue (50cm), then increase the distance to start from near the brown spot, up to starting from behind the baulk line even.
    - you can, if you are good enough to hit the blue every time, even judge the result depending on how fully the blue has been hit, either dead straight, half ball, and so on...

      Welcome to snooker!

Unintentional side spin is something that even the pros suffer with. It can surely only be prevented with practice and plenty of it. How often do you practice? Is it solo or matchplay?

A problem I found with many of my clients over the past few years is that when attempting long pots they cue too low on the cue ball which actually makes it easier to put unintentional side on the white. Make a note next time of where your addressing the white then ask someone to stand sideways of you and ask them to note where you ACTUALLY strike the white. Was it lower than you think? Try to strike the white ball that little bit higher and concentrate 1000% on centre ball striking.

      Hope this helps.
