  • The Basics

Hello everyone I have a few questions about the basics in snooker.

    1. What are the basics in snooker?
    2. In what order should you learn the basics?
    3. How should you go about the learning the basics?
    4. How do each of the basics function?

If you want to talk more about snooker add my MSN: Daniel_Westhead@hotmail.co.uk

Many thanks to all The Snooker Forum users from Daniel Westhead.

Ideally I would seek the help of a coach to get you started on the right lines but if you have no access to one or cant afford it then there are plenty of videos on youtube etc. A good stance, bridge hand, grip and solid cue action are enough to get you started and from there you can learn how to spin the ball and position the white for the next ball etc to make breaks.

    hope that helps
coaching is not just for the pros

lot of stuff. Stance, grip, bridge, aiming, follow thru.... and this is just a list of things to begin with.
I will too, suggest you get a coach. But if this does not work for you, there are tons of great vids that could help. off top of my head, the Terry Griffith vids are great. hope it helps.

I agree with CoachGavin. Even though this forum is a great resource for snooker ideally it shouldn't be used to actually learn the technique, it should be used to get a few tips to try out or from learning experiences of other players. To learn the game you really should get the help of a good coach.

          Like Nic Barrow for instance.

And talking of Nic Barrow, he will be at tsf's "big weekend" on the 26th September.

Daniel it maybe a good start for you if have the time and money to attend i would certainly recommend it. Nic Will be giving some coaching up to 12 of us on the day and i think there are only 4 or 5 spaces left now so HURRY!

Yes he would be the person to go to in my opinion if you wanted a session but he is one of the best coaches in the world (so is Dell Hill for example) and his cost is expensive (rightly so) so you would possibly get as much benefit going to see a local coach on a more regular basis for a cheaper cost so you can keep improving with the help of a coach. I'd certainly recommend having a session with Nic if you can, his website is www.thesnookergym.com.

              Daniel,

Im not a coach nor have I ever been formally coached. I agree with many of the other guys that coaching is a great thing and required to reach a top level in the game.

Dependent on your personality however (ie if you have an inquisitive nature and can research and monitor yourself or with a friend) then there is much you can learn about snooker with some basic resource materials and plenty of practice time.

Resource materials i would reccomend (especially for the basics)

              Steve Davis Successful Snooker book
              Cliff Thorburn Snooker Skills book.

Both of these can be found on amazon for under a fiver and I would reccomend you read then thoroughly then re-read a section at a time whilst practicing each specific element. Dont think of them as a book you read then put down, rather a resource manual as you try to incorporate every aspect in the books into your game.

Then you have the internet, numerous websites on snooker coaching some of the best are youtube, frank callans fc snooker and of course right here on TSF.

From there watch as much snooker as you can, be it TV or old dvd's, try and pick up on what the pros are doing for yourself, personally i think you'll learn alot from this exercise.

Ultimately there is only 1 player at the table holding that cue, and thats you, either go to a coach and get him to show you the basics (at a price obviously) or if your confident enough do some digging on your own. Either way its a journey and we're all still working on "the basics" everytime we're at the table so you must enjoy it to get ahead.

Also go on youtube and enter in "matchroom series" and take a look at that. It comes in 8 parts i think and is a good instructional video in learning all about the basics of the game.
