  • Twisting your hip on the stance

My current coach has been helping me with my stance and has told me i should twist my hips as i get down into the shot so that i lock in, this helps make your back arm straighter and leaves you less room for movement, is this right?

Also im finding i hard to do it i dont understand what he means by twist in, he twist to teach me but im finding it difficult any help would be great.

    thanks

the start of your post says "my current coach" the problem with coaches is they each have there own opinions on stance, set up , etc and some are vastly different than the other, be carefull you dont get caught between two or three different "ways" try and do what feels comfortable and try and stick to one coach ,,

isnt twisting a must when using a "textbook" stance? With your right foot on the line of aim, arent you automatically twisting your hip?

no your not as your going in a straight line so twisting isnt needed.

Surely, left leg bent, right leg straight, you will automatically twist at the hips for this to be possible. Especially with stretching the bridge arm out towards the white.
So if you twist at the hips just a little more than you would naturally it will lock you up steadier than you would otherwise be?
          Im not a coach though.

i think that is the general idea but if your walking into a shot in a straight line tere is no need to move the hips just the right leg to the side for balance, but if you twist in it locks you in so your more solid.

I'm right handed and I like to twist slightly anti-clockwise ... apart from anything else, it gets my eyes more square-on to the shot which I find very helpful ...

Never over twist the hip beyond your "comfort" level...need always to consider the long term effect on your spine and other parts of your bones as well...

The correct purpose of the 'twist' is to get the right hip out of the way of the cue on a longer backswing. It comes naturally if you have the right foot arch on the line of aim, the right shoulder behind the head and the LEFT LEG BENT. If you bend the left leg you must be twisting your hips slightly so just increase that a bit if your grip thumb still touches your trousers.

You do not need any more twist than it takes to get somewhere around 1-2in of clearance between the thumb of the grip and the outside of the trousers or jeans.

This is what Jack Karnehm, one of the best coaches ever, used to recommend.

We would often play more golf on the snooker table than snooker. Always for money!
