For backscrew, the lower you hit the ball, the faster the ball will screw and it will take longer for the cue ball to bite the cloth and accelerate backwards... this is what your friend is doing and it is the preferred backscrew method if you want length, but it is more susceptible to miscue. Trying spending a week or two practicing on your cueing finesse and hitting lower, but gentler, on the cue ball. I did this exercise after work for 8 months and can now screw all the way up the table and then some, even after doubling off of cushions. If you need a demonstration, Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry are excellent professional examples of perfect cueing technique.
