Something to get your cueing in shape.
Put the white in the middle of the bottom cushion (touching) and try to pot the white in all 6 pockets.
Or put 2 reds either side of the brown, blue, pink and black spots leaving 4 inches or so between the reds and play the white up and down the table from the D. That'll tell you whether you are applying any unwanted side.
That should keep you busy for a while!
Another thing to do is to try hitting the ball as soft as you can, using the routine mentioned above, so that it only just reaches the other end of the table. Then gradually hit the white harder, as not only does this help you hit the ball straight and different paces, but also allows you to get a better idea of how hard you need to hit the white to get it to different places on the table (this will dramatically help with playing safety shots)
potting the blue in the middle pocket. practice the art of potting,
practice the technique and stance, ie entering the ball in the desired line of aim.
(gives you an excuse to pot something while you are at it too)
Place a ball on the black spot and cue ball in hand. Pot the ball and play position for another pot off the spot. Just like if you were playing billiards, only you don't move the ball to the blue spot after two pots (though you could do that for extra challenge).
This drill gets you comfortable with potting off the black spot, you learn your way around that area of the table. Aim for a run of 10 to start, if you can do 30-40 you'll be fairly comfortable making breaks around the black.
Thanks alot all, im going in a little while to watch the selby game whilst playing, cant get any better than that:snooker:Yeah, my cueing is not straight at all and a bit wobbly so that needs working on. Ill be on my own, so i may get a bit bored but ill try and keep myself busy with the things mentioned above. Thanks!
All these things mentioned are fine, but there's no substitute for actually playing the game. Find a decent player and play him as much as you can - you'll become a better player in no time and you won't even notice it.
Just try hitting the white ball up and down the table with differetn techniques (left hand side, right hand side etc) to begin with then move onto just potting the balls.
Right ive been practising a few times and ive noticed when i hit the ball straight and it comes back from the cushion, it always hits the cushion and comes back a little to the side. So, i know this is because im putting side on it, but each time it goes diferent sides of the cue when its coming back, so how do i sort this? Just practise cueing straight?
Also, this is how bad i am. I can pot about 3 reds in a line on the table, if i put 4 in a row i struggle. So, will the line up help me to become better at the game?
Im really desperate to get good at this, id love to persue it as a career, although it looks very unlikely im good enough
EDIT: Would maybe an online coaching session with terry grithen(however you spell it) help me? Or will this only improve advanced players that need to perfect their cue action? I live in rotherham, so im unsure of any coaches around this area, and even if there was i would struggle to pay for one.

Yeah a line up of 3 reds. Been trying to clear all of the colours off of their spots but i can only do yellow, green and sometimes brown. So, what about my other point, when i said about putting side on when i dont mean to? Also, when people say they 'imagine' where they need to hit the object ball, i never do this. I just look at the angle and just take the shot, i cant imagine in my head where i need to hit the object ball.

i do that alot, just from looking at object ball i sort of know the line to the pocket is. but if you're not sure about that. always walk to the object ball to see the line, keep your back foot in line with the shot aswell. and step into the shot.
Its very important as a new player to get the stance right etc. helps potting alot easier.
im abit of a newb so feel free to correct me or add bits ^
If practicemakes perfect,and noone's perfect,then whypractice?
Lineup and long straight reds (white on baulk line, red on blue spot or lined up with pink spot).
There are many different variations of lineup.
Have a look on Fergal O'Brien's website. Loads of simple practice routines on there.
