  • [Questions] Cue ball spin causes me to miss pockets?

Hello, i am having a few problems and now the championship is over (well done Neil ) i can stop watching snooker and start playing it a bit more. I am going to just use this one thread and edit it whenever i have a new question so i don't have to spam forums with my questions, lol...thanks everyone..

    :snooker::snooker::snooker:

Okay, whenever i try to put some sort of side spin onto the cue ball, it causes me to miss the object ball into the pocket (if i put spin on the right side of cue ball, i hit the object ball too thick...i think?)... I think the problem may be that as i hit the ball, it goes in a slightly different direction...Is this something that is normal and i have to work with? or am i doing cue ball control all wrong?

    -Thanks

It's called "Throw" on the cueball and when you play with side it throws the cueball off-line a bit . i.e if you put right hand side on the white, the white will swerve slightly to the left and vice-versa, but it does come in again,
practice with easy shots near the pockets, see how much you can change the natural angle by putting loads of side on

      Hi again,

As mentioned above, playing a dead-straight shot with left-hand side will push the ball towards the right jaw as you look at it, whereas right-hand side will push it towards the left jaw.

If you can, try to avoid playing with side spin when possible. Use varied amounts of screw, stun and follow through to gain position on your next shot. I only use side spin if I can't get position with stun, screw or top spin.

Make sure that when you do apply side spin though that you approach the ball as if you were playing side spin. Don't approach the shot and place your cue for centre striking and then move your cue to the right or left - move into the shot knowing the spin you'll be using.

      Hope that helps

When you are below the 100-break standard here's the rule for using side spin and this will help you improve. It's simple:

        DON'T USE SIDE AT ALL!!!

(except for the break-off shot or when absolutely forced to and ONLY when the cueball will hit a cushion)

USE CENTRE-BALL ON EVERY SHOT YOU CAN

If you're learning by yourself then buy one of those training cueballs off ebay. Watch what the ball does when you hit it in the middle (stun/plainball), top (topspin) and bottom (screwback/ dragshot). Those are the basics of controlling the cueball.

Yeah i know a few of these basics pretty well.

so i should use top/middle/bottom sections of cue ball but not side spin?

Yes you have to use top and bottom to break build , but dont go trying to screw back the length of the table etc . Start with a few reds around the black ank pink ant practice soft srcew stun and run through positional shots .

If you miss or dont get the position right do it again , it may get boring and repetative but its the only way to learn .

Once you start mastering this then you can move the white further away and practice similar shots .

Your trying to get the feel of the white .

Okay, thanks. I dont mind spending hours on it as long as i am improving my game . The main problem i have with screw back at the moment is that i find it hard to determin how much screw i am putting on it and i somtimes make the cue ball jump..

But, im gonna go practice soon (i like to stay on forums at same time )

My cue isnt amazing really, it was about ten quid which i bought a few years ago, the tip is rounded so that should be fine. I am currently using normal chalk from my dart board ( Dont judge me i cant get some real chalk until i can manage to go to a sports shop ).

Your cue may not be helping and your chalk is one of the reasons why your mis cueing . This chalk isnt snooker chalk and was not intended to be used for snooker .

If your serious about the game then think about getting a decent cue in the meantime pm me your address and i,ll send you a couple of blocks of triangle snooker chalk .

Plus you may get a good telling off if the owner sees you using that
edit - if its your own table tell yourself off

I am only 15 right now and i got a paper round last week to start saving up for a cue especially(i applied for it about 2 months ago to save up for cue but only just managed to get a round). So will hopfully be getting a few in few weeks/months

I just played for a few hours (without using any side) and i did really well. I am really amazed at how much it has helped by not trying any side... i managed to get breaks of about 12,16,23 a few times (for me its good because i am not very good).

And are you serious about chalk? i don't want to be a bother, ill probably be able to buy some chalk in few weeks.
