Potting long balls close to pocket.

Hi peeps,

I'm sure many have experienced this before... the object ball is somewhat near the top pocket and it's a half table, thickish cut... you apply top spin to try to run the cue ball down the length of the table after the pot and the cue ball either stops in its track or drags after making contact with the top cushion... so, you try it with a middle ball hit and end up stunning the cue ball...

My question is, how do you hit the cue ball with speed to make it run down the table? ...

In this particular kind of shot the effects of sides are reverse as the cueball is so close to the cushion.Strike the cueball slightly below centre to run the cueball down the table.

or loads and loads of top spin if you want to pretend to be jimmy white and make the cueball curve

Yes, when the cue-ball contacts a ball think near the pocket with top-spin when the cue-ball contacts the cushion the spin reverses and spins back towards the cushion after it strikes it, basically!

If you want to get the cue-ball down the table from a ball right over the pocket then if possible aim thinner and don't hit it so hard, it will travel further from the shot you describe, damienlch, by striking the cue-ball not so hard than striking it hard.

In addition, since the spin reverses when the cueball bounces off the cushion then hit the ball thin with screw and your cueball will take off

btw, talking about top spin... i've seen jimmy play a trick shot (some old vids, can't recall when) where he applied loads of top spin and potted the object ball into the middle pocket... cue ball bounced like a foot and half off the side cushion, the spin took control and the cue ball went forward into the same pocket as the object ball...

btw, talking about top spin... i've seen jimmy play a trick shot (some old vids, can't recall when) where he applied loads of top spin and potted the object ball into the middle pocket... cue ball bounced like a foot and half off the side cushion, the spin took control and the cue ball went forward into the same pocket as the object ball...

Top billiards player Mike Russell played a shot similar to that in the 1989 World Professional Billiards Championship final vs. Peter Gilchrist, in billiards, of course, you score for an in-off. Potting a red right over the pocket and cue-ball played with loads of top spin, bounced off cushion and then changed direction and went back into the same pocket!

Lol, that's ridiculous!
I once saw John Spencer pot a red which was over the top pocket. He used shed loads of top and the cue ball hit the top cushion 3 times and he ended up on the black off its spot.

This is not as difficult as it sounds!

You have to just play a power top spin shot and pretend the cushion is not there, when the cue ball bounces off the cushion the top spin will take hold and the cue ball will ark if your lucky and go back towards the cushion, I play this shot quite a lot on a pool table, it's a great way to hold the cue ball and looks really cool as well!

On a snooker table if you can screw the white back from a long distance then you should be able to play the top spin shot as well, at my local snooker/pool club we have named the shot the "jimmy hold" ha ha !
