  • My Lesson With Terry

I would like to thank Terry for an enjoyable afternoon. This was the first time that I have taken a lesson of any sort, in snooker. Terry was able to find and suggest corrections to my stance and stroke. The reasons I say suggest is, as always, it is now up to me (the student) to put into practice what Terry taught me. Any alteration in your stance and stroke will feel uncomfortable, especially when you have been playing as long as I have. The trick is to persevere. I know that once his alterations have become second nature to me, I will be booking another lesson.

I highly recommend Terry as a teacher and those that do not have access to him in person, should take advantage of his video taping analysis.

Thanks again Terry, I will be purchasing a mirror this afternoon.

Cheers Mike, and thanks for the endorsement. Remember to get a mirror large enough so you can see from the top of your head down to the cue.

Hmm, Terry instructing his students to put makeup prior to playing...

Likely a trick to get your opponent off

Terry is probably the best member that has ever graced this forum, and there have been some good ones.

Hey, if you look good you feel good and I figure a little eye shadow and lipstick just might help to throw the opponent off.

              Mr P:

Thanks for the endorsement. Now if you would like to cover my expenses to come over I can offer you at least 5 hours of free lessons.

                Snooker Grip

                Hi Terry,
I have recently purchased a camcorder, which enabled me to video myself for the first time while playing. After placing the camcorder directly behind me i noticed that at the end of my drawback my wristbone would move out to the right(looking from behind the shot)and then come into line again on the followthrough. In your experience is this a subconcious effort in players who find themselves incorrectly getting down on the wrong alignment or something else ?

You recommend a skirt too or would that be too much?

Terry - I think you've forgotten about him having to wear fishnet pantyhose too, haven't you?

                            manu147:

I would likely need more information than you've given, but I'll try. I think it's more important that you check the line of the cue on both the backswing and delivery as you sound like you're turning your wrist a bit sideways and the butt of the cue will therefore go a bit sideways.

Get your camera out and on a tripod and line it up right behind the cue so you can watch the end of the butt to see if it goes sideways by ANY amount during the backswing and then the delivery.

This is normally a sign of the grip being too tight so make sure the back 3 fingers of your grip are being pushed out of the way by the butt of the cue during the backswing so that at the rear pause or the end of your backswing only the inside of the thumb and forefinger are actually gripping the cue and the last 3 fingers are just touching the butt but are not applying any pressure at all.

No, I don't think this is a function of an incorrect set-up at all. For the most part a player can set up and have any kind of near normal stance, but he must be able to backswing and deliver absolutely straight. If the hip or trousers are in the way of the backswing then he should alter his stance to have the hip clear and the trousers should be at least 2 inches from the butt of the cue at the end of the backswing so there's no interference.
