  • jimmy white's stance/cue action

i was reviewing some clips of jimmy white's cue action, from the older clips.

i cant see properly from the camera angles, but does it seem like hes not bending down at all?

i notice his stance seems unusual as well.

    can anyone comment on this?

    Jimmys coach

Hi I am not sure about stance etc but I was in Thailand for a few months and got into the pool scene there and met a guy called alan bell was used to be jimmys coach for years I had a pool lesson with him he was telling me jimmy cues very low which helps him find the centre of the cue ball then raises the cue on impact using the clock face approch

I also play like that a little bit, cue very low...but not nearly as good obviously. At times I need to cue almost two cue tips lower then where I intend to hit the cue ball to get the desired hit. I'm sure a mega talent like Jimmy has perfect timing and can make any technique work great. In my case, it is probably a technical fault, but I have no idea how to correct it or if it is even worth the effort.

        hmmm
i was looking through the older vids

his stance is a lot more slanted than other players
and he doesnt seem to bend down at all. it looks like hes just leaning forward.

I have a coaching video from Jimmy White and Alan MacManus and although it's mostly Alan, Jimmy does show a few things, especially his rest technique.

He does bend his left leg a bit and does move his hips to the right although since he is not a really tall guy you don't notice it as much as you do with a 6-footer like Steve Davis.

He also grips with his forefinger throughout the shot and has a very short rear pause, almost none at all.

However, he was still able to pot a lot of balls and still does from time to time. Now that he is carrying more weight he may not be bending down as much as he used to

            thanks terry
im asking about it because of 2 things
            1. bending down - do you bend down with your back? or do you bend down with your abs/stomach. i notice younger jimmy doesnt seem (on the clip) to bend down as low as many of the players

            2. twisting your body/leg/non-square stance
there are moments where i want to further follow-through, but my hand keeps hitting my chest when i do very deep screw, or sometimes i find myself brushing past my waist bone. both of which make the delivery of the cue not as smooth

i'm looking for solutions and found jimmy to be helpful
by not bending as low and twisting/putting the leg back rather than square stance, i dont find myself not brushing past my hips/waist/pocket or hitting my chest too early in a follow through

i hope i managed to draw a picture of what i mean. do you have any advice on this?

              In reply:

              1. NO! Keep the back as straight as possible and bend from the hips.

              2. Your hand SHOULD hit your chest at the end of EVERY delivery. Either drop your elbow near the end of the delivery or else make your stance a little less square to the shot. The back of your grip hand thumb should be at least 2" clear of your trousers at the bottom of the hip/top of straight leg.

Jimmy has changed his stance. Watch him in the early 80's. There is a clip of him making a 126 in the world champs in 1982. At this time he played with a much more boxer stance. This was the general way at that time except for maybe steve davis who started playing square on. Later, his 147 in 1992 for example you can see jimmy is more square on but twists in order to get his upper body in the same position as earlier in his career. Even now his upper body is quite side on and his bridge arm is quite straight which emphasizes this more. Its just his feet are more side on than when he was younger - and yes he is quite short so you have to remember that too.Like has been said i think the extra weight over the years has maybe led to him going more around his body than he used to. I hope all that helps a little

LOL... it's slasher, i'm gonna ask him now, hi.. slasher how you screw it?
i found that when i apply a very deep screw shots with 100% hard force with 10mm mush room tips, my cue sounds are very sharp, that kind of woody sounds, is my mushroom tip fix properly and only screw half table? sorry the tip that you using it's doesn't looks like 9.5mm lol, looks like predator Z2 shaft with 11.75mm?
