  • Concentrating on positioning instead of pot

Does anyone have their concentration on cue ball position instead of the pot when they play?

I mean, there must be some people who are better at that then just concentrating on the pot I assume...

Every player at some point will concentrate more on the position instead of the pot. Some will do this more times than others.

You must not do it. You must concentrate on the pot more than the position. Position is planned before you get down to the shot. Then when you get down to the shot you strike the cue-ball where you planned and at the pace you planned. If you get that right then you should end up in the position you want after the shot.

You must force yourself to concentrate on the pot. Whatever happens on the table, you cannot afford to miss shots which you should get. Everybody misses easy shots, but you need to miss as few of them as you can. At the end of the day, the pot is all that matters because even if you play the best positional shot in the world, if you miss then your opponent will be at the table and you will be in your chair. You have got to dominate the table, and that happens when you don't miss many pots.

Concentrating on the position will also influence the choice of shot to play next.

I have recently started to pass up the easy shots in favour of those that will leave me in a better position.

It is just a bummer when you duff that shot whilst you would probably have potted the easier one.

Same end result - back in your chair.

        Hard game this

We all know to our cost that taking your eye off the pot leads to end of break. But so too does losing the positional side of the shot.
But taking your eye off the shot is different from concentrating on position.
Personally I think that picking an exact spot for the white ball to finish on actually helps the pot - you need to visualise the whole result in order to make any pot easy.
I reckon that it's better to give a bit more thought to the postional side if the pot is easy, and the positional side needs to be spot on.
Conversely, if the pot is difficult and you have lee-way on the positional side, then give the pot more attention.
It's all about what you are thinking and visualising before you get down on the shot, as you get down on the shot, and at the front and rear pauses (if you have them).
If you're potting balls off the lampshades, looking good but not getting breaks, then it's probably because you are giving too much thought to the pot, and not enough to position.
          Just my opinion.
