  • Dell Hill to coach India's team

NEW DELHI: Legendary cueist and England team manager Derek Hill has been appointed India's professional snooker coach by the Sports Authority of India ahead of the Asian Games in China this year.

Hill, currently heading the coaching scheme of World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), was handed the job on the recommendation of the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India.

"Hill will be in India for a period of one month. We have appointed him to impart specialised training to our Indian Snooker players participating in the Asian Games and to end country's medal drought in the individual event," Ravi Tandon, vice-president, BSFI said.

"He will be fine-tuning the skills of our players. It's a great honour to have him with us. He will be arriving in India in the first week of October for the conditioning camp of the selected players for the Asian Games.

"Although Derek had increased his remuneration from $150 to $200 per day but SAI agreed to that after due consultation with the federation," said Tandon.

Having more than two decades of experience, Hill has coached several national teams like Thailand, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Russia, Ireland and England.

He has also coached world snooker champions such as Englishmen Ronnie O'Sullivan, nicknamed "The Rocket" due to his rapid playing style, Peter Ebdon, Stephen Hendry and Scotland's Graeme Dott.

"Hill is an 'A' certified world professional Snooker coach and his experience will enrich the players and boost their confidence. India will double its medal tally in Snooker this time. India has never won any individual gold in the Asian Games. Yasin Merchant and Rafat Habib had won gold medal in the Team event in 2002 Busan Games," said Tandon.

Earlier this month, BSFI had appointed Filipno Jorge C Dacer as the professional coach for the Pool discipline for a period of one year.

The former German Open 9-Ball champion, Dacer will be in India for four weeks before going back to home, return in October to assess the progress and would remain with the Indian contingent till the Asian Games, to be held in Guangzhou in November.

Well Del is a legend and he's been known to wield a cue so using a vast amount of journalistic licence they come up with "lengdary cueist"

Even I don't push the boundaries that far!!

If I did I could describe myself as a Ranking Event Winner. the fact that it was a small ladies event wouldn't get mentioned of course!!

Does anyone know at what level Del has played at and what is top break is? One thing to remember tho is that you don't have to be a world champ to be a good snooker coach. Don't think Frank Callan won any ranking events but for a time he was the best coach around.

Frank Callan was a county champion when he was in his 20's and as has been said, a good coach doesn't have to have been a great player and in fact the opposite is sometimes true as a great player has trouble teaching a student to develop his own natural style as he unconciously believes his own technique is the best one around.

I have never been a great player, but maybe a good one as I also won a country championship way back in 86' but I firmly believe I am a good coach who tries to nuture a player's own natural technique (unless it's REALLY out-to-lunch that is).

Yeah, I think coach needs to be at a decent level to coach. For instance I would not get coached by someone who had a highest break of 20! Having said that I agree with above and a coach needs quite different skills to a player as he needs to explain how to do something etc whereas I think a lot of players can do a skill but would struggle to explain and get his or her student to do the same skill. Some of the best coaches in the world were not the greatest players. If I am correct I think PJ Nolan was never a main tour pro or anything but is well known as an excellant coach and as far as I know Del never played competitively much and I am not sure his highest break is much over 100. However it has not stopped him being probably the most well known coach around.
