  • snooker clinic needed :(

    hi there,
i was away for 3 weeks in Germany for some school exchange program.
And i did not touch my cue for 3 weeks.
So, as soon as i am back , i went to the club to stroke...
it was bad news... i developed many new bad habits and angle judgement off.Seriously need help...
    Problems.
    1. Tend to grip the cue too tight and early which cause deceleration through the white instead of accelerating through the white.
    2. Totally lost the calmness when i approach a shot.
    3. Cue action tends to twist to the left( Seriously need help in this)
    4. Bad angle judgement.

    Bryan:

There are tons of coaching strings on here which explain the corrections for all the faults you mention or you can try thesnookergym.com or else watch some coaching videos on youtube.com.

A quick answer to your questions would be:
    1. Loosen the grip until the cue is just laying in the 4 fingers and the thumb is loosely holding it there.
    2. Lack of confidence is what makes a player nervous and tense.
    3. Caused by your grip or else incorrect alignment.
    4. Judgement of angles is obtained through practice, but first you must learn how to deliver the cue straight.

My recommendation is go see a coach. Don't know of any in your neck of the woods but there must be one or two good ones around.

Exactly the same thing happened to me recently, got back from South America 3 weeks ago and my first 2 wed night tournaments went badly, couldn't pot a ball and my safety was not as good as usual.

Even playing pool at work wasn't working, I couldn't pot the simplest shots.

Then, after the 2nd wed night effort I just got on a table by myself and stopped thinking too hard about things and gradually started potting again, and as my confidence increased so did the results.

So, I think in my case it was simply low confidence, almost like I 'expected' not to be able to do it after 3 weeks away.. whereas, truth is 3 weeks is nothing for the brain, it still remembers how to do things I haven't done for years.

I just needed to have a bit more confidence in my ability, such as it is.

So, my advice is to just get on a table, relax and hit a few balls around without setting any goals or putting any pressure on yourself, just get the cue action/stroke back, and the rest will hopefully follow.
