  • Short clip of address position. Feedback please.

    Hey guys

I've been trying to improve my technique via the snookerprotips videos and messaging Neil who makes the videos, but it's only now I've been able to upload a short clip. The clip is poor quality but you can well enough.

My highest break is only 40 and I usually make at least one early 20s break each time I play. I play twice a week (around 4-6 frames at a time)

    The clip:
http://www.mediafire.com/?a2dg25yya82ou95 (Less than 1MB, will download in a few seconds, plays in windows media player)

Now I believe my stance ( in terms of feet) is perfectly fine. You can't see my feet unfortunately because my phone doesn't stand up by itself so that's the best I could do.

My understanding is right foot on the line of the shot, left foot shoulder width apart, almost parallel.

After looking at the clip it seems I'm bending to the right and thus my right arm is off straight to the right.

Finally, my thumb is pointing to the floor to straighten my elbow.

Hopefully you can see a lot of flaws from the clip and give me some advice!

    Thanks for your time, Joe.

You might have more joy if you try playing on a snooker table!

    (Sorry )
Oh, and that's a bad miss.

Your action doesn't look too bad to me, but I'm no coach. Terry Davidson is the one you need, he'll probably be along shortly

I am not sure but I may have detected your wrist bending/straightening on the stroke? .. but it may have been the slight angle. You elbow is slightly outside the line of the cue, but as long as it's within 1-2 inches and doesn't prevent the cue coming through straight then it's a-ok.

To test your cueing pot straight shots with top spin and try to have the white follow the object ball into the pocket. Start by doing it across the table off the blue spot, then move on to long blues into the corner. If you can consistently pot both balls say 8/10 times then you're doing well.

It would probably be beneficial to see you playing those straight blues. You just need some sort of stand for the phone.. or if the camera struggles in the low light a better camera - do you have a mate with a new phone? My HTC desire has an amazing camera on it.

I recently bought one of these:
        http://joby.com/gorillamobile

I already had the gorillapod itself, works wonders with my digital camera, so I just bought the mobile accessories pack. Previously I had been balancing my phone on the plastic ball container

The suction attachment feels really strong/solid and should work with just about any phone, provided there is a flat-ish surface on the phone. It will allow me to attach the camera to various places, even over the pocket itself.

Did you click "Click here to start download.." and save the file on your computer?
What did you try to play it with?

Windows Media Player should do it.. it's just a normal mpeg file.

Take your phone or camera to a club, and get on a table. If you are cueing at nothing, then it's easy to cue straight. It's the cueing straight in coordination with your eyes that needs to be seen!

P.S Looking forward to seeing a new vid!

It would download for about half the content and then stall for some reason, of course remember I'm in a rural area and on wireless broadband so sometimes my speed isn't all it should be

I've uploaded it to a website so you don't have to download it Terry, and for anyone else obviously.

Should be fine now mate. Sorry about that.

I was also thinking it would be probably a better idea to do another one with my webcam.

But please try and find something out of that one, and also let me know different angle or what you'd like to see to give you a better idea.

                      Thanks Joe.

Personally I would film the stance from the side because then you can see whether you elbow and grip are in a vertical line. You can also see how level your cue is and unless you measured it a table or chair is going to be a different height to a snooker table which may affect the stance anyway. Upload one from the side and front views as well and that might be more helpful IMO.

                        Hope that helps,

I've done a clip of my front, side and back view on my webcam. I also did one showing my feet and waist. I'm uploading them now and you I'll put them up in a few hours. Cheers.

You need to do it on a snooker table, not on small furniture in your house.

I appreciate that, but I don't have a camera to do that at the moment.

                              It's better than nothing right?

Anyway, I've uploaded a better clip from the side, back and side.

                              Here it is:
