Check out this AIMING SYSTEM - Is it total Bollocks ?
I'll never understand some of these Americans and their various aiming methods. Why not simply aim by feel? All the pro players feel their shots, they don't need any rational thinking during execution.
There are likely a couple of hundred various 'aiming systems' out there for both pool and snooker, and most of them orginate from the US.
In addition, most of them have just one 'aim' in mind and that's to make money for the author.
However, aiming is not the problem with missed pots at snooker. It is the fact that most amateur players have a technique which does not allow them to deliver the cue consistently straight.
I've found with most students after a bit of experience just shooting balls are able to pick out the correct line of aim because the brain works that out virtually automatically as long as their vision is acceptable.
In addition (there will be no charge for this 'aiming system') every player I've ever come across starts out trying to place the cueball into the correct contact position on the object ball to direct it to the pocket.
It's really very simple, make the leading edge of the cueball contact the point on the object ball which is directly opposite the pocket. Whether they imagine the 'ghost ball' plant set-up and then try and replace that imaginary ghost ball with the cueball or not, that is exactly what they are trying to do.
Perfectionists will insist it's not REALLY a pure plant situation as there is some resistance from the cloth and the contact which alters the angle slightly, but if a player stays down and still on completion of the delivery and observes the path of the object ball his brain will get the feedback it requires and will AUTOMATICALLY and UNCONCIOUSLY correct that in future similar shots.
My own coaching philosophy is...99.9% of pots (barring kicks) are missed because the player failed to deliver the cue straight along the intended line of aim.
If a player starts out with a solid basic technique and delivers the cue straight he will improve rapidly, whereas the student who is worried about his selection of the aiming angle will not improve as rapidly.
