I saw the snow last Friday evening and fully intended to go out with the camera on the Saturday morning.
I got up at the crack of dawn made myself a cup of tea and a flask and brought the wife up a cup.
I wrapped myself up in my all-in-one suit, grabbed my camera gear and made my way outside into what I can only describe as a freezing blizzard. I backed the car out of the garage and let it warm up while I loaded it. Jumped in the car and sat there for a few minutes....then thought NO WAY.
I drove the car back into the garage went back into the house, undressed went upstairs and snuggled up in bed next to the wife, gave her a cuddle, kissed the back of her neck and whispered "It's terrible out there".
To which she replied "I know, and would you believe my stupid husband is out taking photographs in it".

The secret seemed to be a very broad butt and even broader tip(s)!! (and a headscarf in -18 temperatures!)
On that basis I am still in the Juniors!Janie Watkins

HI I once went to Gaspe Quebec Canada a few years ago and i saw an old woman about 80 years old shoveling snow.
She had a small shovel about 9 inches wide and the snowbank was 12 ft high we laughed so much that i almost had a hard attack should have taken a picture it would have made the first page in the newspaper.

Hahahahahaha *ROFL*
Also, you don't want to be walking slow sometimes and running around the snow other times. Maintain an equal and steady pace around the driveway, don't rush through and take your time, take a look around at all the snow and plan your shovelling through, effectively removing snow that would open way for more snow to be removed.
And don't forget.....your hand should always hit the chest even when you're not looking to shovel hard.

After the most recent flurries I saw a chance to get some much needed shovelling practice in. I managed to clear a bit but just couldn't manage to clear the whole driveway. Looking at the pattern of the cleared bits I think I can see the problem. I am just not shovelling in a straight line!
Tempted to buy an expensive handmade shovel but don't really think this will help. Maybe some shovelling coaching would be money better spent.
At least the club is always warm!Oh, and that's a bad miss.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!
Whist on my way to a full clearance of the path earlier I got distracted on the final black ice by a quick flash of a council gritter, this caused me much annoyance as I've never had a full clearance before, in my disgust I threw my shovel onto the path and broke the shaft into 4 pieces, can any of you recommend a top class repair man or might I be better of going to visit somebody in person and trying out a few shovels first before making that all important purchase? One day I'll make a century, I've knocked in a 51!

Ever since Ryanair baggage handlers bent my (uninsured) shovel, I've been unable to clinch victory in a single visit. Usually I trip up after a couple of minutes and my girlfriend has to finish the rest while I boot up the Playstation. One day I hope to regain my winning form...

One of my problems is positional play. I find I am happily shovelling along, quite pleased with myself, but towards the end I find finishing the clearance very tricky because I find the remaining snow has landed awkwardly, particularly around the edges and not in open play.
I'd finished most of the clearance three weeks ago!

Gerry Armstrong. At least, you got your priorities right and let the wife do it, until you get your new hand planed shovel. Keep up the good work and you will improve no end when you get the right tools for the job.
Start as you mean to go on.
Well done!
