  • Air gap in grip hand

I've noticed that all the coaches on here strongly recommend having no air gap in the grip and I just wondered how important this is? And also, it seems you are supposed to predominantly hold the cue with the thumb and first finger. I don't think I do this - my grip is quite natural I'm not really sure how to explain it but I think I grip it with the whole hand. When I'm playing at my best I hold the cue really loosely and have quite a large air gap. If I try to hold it with first finger and thumb it feels quite uncomfortable and I was just wondering if it's worth sticking with it if it'll be better in the long run. My end goal is turning professional so I'm trying to perfect all aspects of my technique (very difficult and frustrating process!!) so any help would be much appreciated :snooker::snooker:

How long have you been playing, how has your improvement/progression been? What is your highest break, in a match. Practice breaks are good, but unfortunately as I know only too well do not count for anything.

Not being negative, just realistic. How old are you?

All the best man, good luck. It's a tough circuit out there.

I'm 17, been playing 3 and a half years, highest break in practice 140 in a match 113. I've been in a really bad patch the last six months or so (messing with my cueing a bit too much tbh) but I'm starting to come through it and play some good stuff again. I'd say my strong points aren't talent or flair but rather bottle and desire to practice. I know it'll be tough but I'd far rather give it a good crack playing the game I love than give up, go with a safer option and always wonder.
I just took a video today and was playing the best I had done for a while. Strangely enough it seems as though the air gap is no longer there I wasn't paying any attention to it really at the time. Anyway, here is the video would like to know what you guys think of my play in general. Sorry about the lighting, angles etc. Camera man doesn't have a clue how to use my phone

Hey man, nice vid. You were hitting the ball sweet there. Keep it up and go for it. We all know it won't be easy, but like you said forget the safer option for now. You have years to waste. Bottle is worth a lot more than talent (if you're hitting frame winning breaks and not total clearances all the time).

        Good luck.

That way you're not too afraid to hit it a bit harder, unless you're nervous of using the rest.
BTW if it's natural and it works leave it alone.

Very well played Theguywithaplan. Not a lot wrong there, you play very well. Keep on with the good work.

Also, your mate made quite a good job videoing it with a phone, whatever you may think.

Wish I was able to play on such a good table as you were playing on.
