  • pHUiii's Journal to 147.

Hey there, not sure if I'm allowed to start like a personal journal for the community to see. I want to track my progress and my thoughts on the game as I venture into this journey to become as great as I can be. As posted in introductions like most others I'm formally an 8 ball player, I regularly compete in many competitions and can hold my own against most players. The one thing I've always noticed is the quality of a snooker player, it's always the snooker players that seem to beat me in the final few play offs in the tournaments. Also after watching tonnes of videos of the professionals and seeing some great players in front of my eyes I decided to give it a shot myself. To me even making a 50 seems so far away but I'm determined to go as far as possible.

Today I went to the pool hall around 12pm and began practicing. I did some line up drills, basic color drills and then had a few printouts from a book called 'the snooker gym'. I had to hit the white ball from the string line and cut the black ball in using no side, it was hard! I think it took me an hour straight of trying to finally pot in 1 black. Snooker is tough!, I also worked on my stance and cueing action and making sure it's in proper form. I've decided to teach myself as much as I can before I go and get some professional coaching. Hopefully the more I play I can post about my sticking points and see what you guys can offer with feedback.

    Peace! ^^

        welcome and good luck

If you are considering getting a professional coach, I'd personally opt for paying out for one right at the start, before any bad habits will become ingrained.

Played in an A-grade 8 ball comp tonight, lesson learned - don't play 6 hours of snooker and then enter an 8 ball comp. I was totally exhausted and better yet national/state level players game only to make it more difficult. Only won 2 matches out of 10, but I finally beat this 1 guy I've been playing for the last 6 months. Don't think I've ever won a single frame and pull it off pretty well I believe. He broke and almost cleared the table, the 8 ball froze in front of the corner pocket. So I had to run it out, it wasn't easy since a lot of the balls were frozen against the rail. The rest of the matches however I was just too tired to focus, so I just had a fun mindset and had a good time. 6 hours of snooker won't really make a difference, but I guess if I have days pure for drills and keep it aside from competition days I think I can do really well. Maybe even win my first comp

Hey there, went to the pool hall today to practice my snooker. Really focusing hard on the foundations and getting my technique right. I've noticed my potting accuracy is increasing very fast, as well as my cue ball control as well. Still making breaks between 10-20 and becoming more confident. I got to play with some pretty good snooker players, I played 1 guy who made a break of 91 in front of me it was pretty awesome. Like I never knew that the cue ball has so many variations in terms of stroke like hitting 1 tip above when hitting on an angle for the black ball with certain amount of power can position the white ball down the end of the table in a different way if i was to hit a few tips difference.
Snooker is such a complicated sport but I'm determined to make that 50 in the next 6 months . The quality of the tables are decent and balls are fine, only costs me $10 to practice all day so I'm very keen to practice a lot.

Haven't had much time to practice due to new years and low on cash. Played 8 ball comp tonight, lost in the play offs hmmmm not too happy about that.
Can't wait to get back onto the snooker tables and practice

I would strongly recommend you try and raise the cash to get TheSnookerGym's 'HTMA100' book and videos. They are costly but they do give you a step-by-step process to work your way to making 100 breaks, starting with the pure fundamentals at the red level.

There are also practice drills included, but start with 'shooting the spots'. Cueball on brown spot and roll over the black spot and back to baulk line. Once you can do that where the cueball comes back and hits your tip, increase the pace to getting 4 lengths of the table and work on your technique until you can get the cueball remaining on or very near the centre-line of the table on the 4 lengths shot. (This is very difficult to do, especially if the table is slightly off, so balance out any rolls in the table. As an example I just moved my table and haven't got it back to perfectly level yet so when I shoot the spots for 4 lengths I know my cueball will end up about 2 ball widths to the right of the brown spot).

Thanks for the recommendation! - I just looked up the program and it sounds great. Obviously I won't be making centuries over night but I'm extremely determined to do it. I'll save up the money, it shouldn't take long I guess I gotta figure out how to make payments because I'm from Australia but I really want to get this program and get my training started I'm just so inspired by amazing players like, I tried so hard for the last 6 months to win this local 8 ball tournament and then a snooker player rocks up and beats everyone with ease.
I want to be at that level

Hey guys, haven't disappeared from snooker no worries! I finally decided that I needed coaching so I ended up looking for the best coaches I could find and ended up getting coaching from Bruce McPhee. Since I earn my own money and a full time student I got discounts for my coaching sessions. So I learned proper stance, sighting and cue action and did a few drills for fundamentals. Hitting up and down the spots, potting object and white ball into corner pockets with proper cue action. Short pots from yellow spot to middle pocket to corner pocket, then from yellow spot to length of pink spot to corner pocket then same on opposite side of the table. He said I should do at least 10 minutes on each drill = 70 Minutes total for fundamentals. I also decided to stop competing in tournaments until I'm making at least breaks of 40+, and I also realized the reason why I'm not winning is because I don't think. My bad habits creeped in as I relied on just potting a ball, getting an estimated position and then improvising from there rather then having a solid action plan right from the first shot. So that's my goal, to develop my fundamentals and learn how to position/control the white and as well as working on my thought process from start to end. Hopefully within a year I'll win my first tournament!

Played an 8 ball tournament round robbin tonight, should've went through to the final but the last guy I played fluked a shot that set him up for the 8 ball. 5 wins out of 8, top 2 had 6 wins. I potted out on one game so I was happy with that, gotta work on my snooker drills. I'll enter another tournament in 3 months time to see if I can win. Thanks for the support!
