Courtesy of Nic Barrow and TheSnookerGym here is an exercise you can try in solitary practice.
Place a red somewhere between black and pink (doesn't have to be exactly in the centre of the table), all colours on spot and mark the red spot lightly with a piece of chalk. Cueball in hand within the 'D' and try and cannon the yellow, green and brown as in a 2-cushion safety shot.
Always place the red and cueball on the same spot for each attempt.
This will teach you (same as billiards will) how the cueball reacts using different contacts and power. Once you teach yourself how to hit the baulk colours you should be able to adjust your aim or power on how to miss them.
The second part of this exercise is to attempt to miss each baulk colour on each side and get the cueball as close to the baulk cushion as you can

Never heard of that Terry. Is a good way to learn safety play. We mostly played for the table or some money in our teens, so had to learn how to play safety.
I did also play some billiards as well. Used to knock up a few centuries also, but never could get the hang of playing "top of the table" billiards.
Now when Horace Lindrum came to our club, he could really play that game. It never took Horace long to get the balls into position for "top of the table" and he really could score from it ... talk about making it look easy!
