    Help

    Can anyone help me?

I was practicing at my local snooker club yesterday and as i've just started playing the game i was trying some of the tips on how generate backspin. I kept my hand flat and straight and kept the cue low and followed through but nothing happened when the cue ball hit the red. I haven't got my own cue yet so will this problem have something to do with using the club's cue?

Club cue's and tips are not very well looked after so this is not a good start, but you should be able to get screwback on any cue as its down to the person's technique.

I would spend as couple of ££'s and by yourself a nice cue, 17.5 -18.5oz with a 9.5 - 10mm tip and practice, also don't expect miracles straight away.

I'm getting myself a cue early next week but when you are playing a backspin shot what is your lining up and shooting drills. Some helpful tips?

Consider reading as many instructional articles from 9-ball players (preferably american) as you can, they're far more skilled instructers than british snooker players.
Start the delivery of the cue, after the preliminary strokes, slowly. Of course, to get a decent amount of screw you'll have to play the shot harder but that should never mean you push hard from the start of the delivery. no matter how hard you're playing a shot always start the delivery slowly. Do not accellerate to the cue-ball, accellerate THROUGH the cue-ball. You may feel like you're following through but if you're strugling to get screw on the white, you're almost surely not following through. Do not put pressure on the cue with the fingers, just let the cue rest in your hand, do not tighten the grip through the shot.

the amount ov screw u get depends on your follow through ability not how hard u can hit the ball. some people also make contact with the white and then pull the cue back becuase they think this is right....infact if u wanted too do it then that is completley opposite too what u should be doing remember too keep the butt slighty raised and FOLLOW THROUGH and keep the cue there (unless its a dead straight screw haha) and keep your head low like some other man said (sorry bout the memory loss ) i can get about 12-15 foot of it just by following through....and that does sound alot but practice and i expect you will do better.

                clean balls

I think this is my first post here.

I have no screw effect (or much less than it should be) with a dirty/old cue ball. the game changes completely when the balls are clean and polished ( as new ). I can now see the cueball accelerating (when screwing back corectly).

I remember practising same screw shot with the cueball/object ball in middle pockets. this shot became more and more frustrating for me as the ball was getting full of chalk

I am using (polished) aramith premier balls for now.
Will receive the tournament ones sunday. i've heard they're more responsive and a bit heavier.

                and also.. timing.. NOT power.
