  • Another Nerves Thread

    I recently have started letting nerves get the better of me whether its a local league frame or a more important match like a EASB event sometimes i see that i am going to miss before i even strike the ball and its driving me mad, i more a less talk myself into missing the darn thing.
    Now i am a decent player (highest practice 147-tournament-142) but not a great player so why is it sometimes i shake like a (excuse the pun) sh*tting dog and sometimes nothing one day i can knock in nice breaks and play a good allround game all day then the next day i can't hit a bulls arse with a shovel no matter what i try or do.
    I feel this must be down to inconsistency and probs lack of practice too but is the nerves issue a age thing since i am approaching 43

    I know there is many threads about this which i have read but i still don't find a simple answer really to why all of a sudden i have started with this when before i was fearless
    I have a few big matches coming up and i am trying to be 110% fighting fit for them.

    I would try to offer solace and advise you, but as I'm going to be competing against you in the last 16 of the EASB seniors, I'd like to suggest problems like this are insurmountable and stay with you forever!
    I often use large words I don't really understand in an attempt to appear more photosynthesis.

        Pick up a copy of "Pleasures of Small Motions". The langusage is geared towards pocket billiards, but it certainly applies to snooker.

        Best book of this type in print, IMHO.

            There is no quick fix to dealing with nerves that can really be sorted out on here in a few messages but its important to remember that they are just a normal and natural reaction that your body uses to protect itself.
            Your body can start to act in a different way as you get older and this can mainly be down to what experiences you have had in certain situations, so your body has learned that at certain times it needs to look after itself a little more.
            when having these feelings its important to try to find ways to rationalise them and find ways that suit yourself to work through them.

            I use a lot of visual aids within my work to change negative thoughts into positives to encourage players to keep in that positive frame of mind way before they are due to play, during playing and just as important after.

              My twopenneth buddy... (for what it's worth... lol).. is like i told you in the club the other night... and spelled out in this PDF doc.

              "Remember practice like you play,and play like you practice”

              You need to stop "taking the Micky" with shot selection on those who you know can't punish you mate!

              And finally... stop beating me so badly... lol

                Yes mate i know your right,
                That's why i play better against people like you because i know if i ball's up im fielding (which i hate lol as you know) and you know in our club not many can push you hard enough.

                That's why i said my play is better in matches than in practice although last nights match was poor but again i wasn't pushed and punished for mistakes which drops my game.

                  There is no one in our club that can push you hard enough... that's why you should be even more ruthless and make them pick even more balls out for you.. i know this gets harder to do though as you get older "grandad"... lol
