  • Cue Butt Up Or Down

Just wondering which way up to hold the butt of the cue, since i've used a cue i've held the coin downwards but my mates keep telling me that you should hold it upwards, when i see the professionals on t.v they all have it upwards so maybe this will improve my game if i try and hold it upwards, i have used the cue up for a slight moment before but found it uncomfortable cause i wasn't used to it, what do you all think?.

Virtually all cue makers make a cue with the arrows (or chevrons) in the ash on the top side of the cue where the badge is, and a lot of people use these to sight down. Obviously you don't have to, (and can't on a maple cue anyway as there are none) but i think the majority of people play with the badge uppermost.

I hold mine with the flat to the right (right handed). I have always done this as it just felt right to me when I was young.
I only realised in the last year that most people hold the flat upwards after registering on this forum.
I have since tried it this way but it feels weird so I use my old way now.

I don't really know if it matters.

whatever you feel comfortable and whether you like to sight down the arrows on the shaft or not depending how they are aligned to the nameplate

doesnt matter which way you hold a cue so long as you deliver the tip correctly to the white ball for what you want to do with it

Its purely an individual thing . Most players have the badge facing up as cues usually have most arrows on that part of the cue and players like to use them for sighting or to see if they are cueing straight , or they just like to feel the round bit of the butt . Whilst others prefer the feel of the flat resting on their finger pads .

I switch cues very often and usually use the badge facing up but on one i have the badge down as i prefer the grain thats on the cue that way ,

Some players hold the badge to the side as they prefer sighting down the tight grain .

There's no right or wrong way! It's a personal preference & how you like to feel the flat bit on the butt of the cue in your hand.

I hold it with the flat bit facing upwards but I've seen players like Stephen Hendry & Mark J. holding it with the flat bit facing downwards... Other players like Ronnie & Higgins hold it with the flat bit facing upwards! :snooker:

I don't believe this will help your game in anyway, it's all in the head

in my case it faces outwards - but upwards on my pool cue - it makes no difference!

I read somewhere on the internet that people who hold the butt coin down are prone to twisting the cue when doing the back swing and getting ready to take the shot, apparently holding the coin upwards is the way forwards?.

I know some players who use the flat of the cue in the finger pads , ok, it's not textbook , but if it works, then that's just fine.

Personally I have the flat facing upwards inline with the darts in the ash shaft on the top. (this helps me deliver cue the same way on every stroke) even if I'm cueing short while in amongst the balls, I know I still have the cue facing upright, so my cue action will be the same when shortening my grip up, making for a more consistant stroke.

i used to have the flat bit facing to the right of my hand...until i got my JP cue and when i was in the shop one of the people in the shop told me i should always have but facing up...

i worked out why and found it better...however, it doesnt really matter where i hold it as i very rarely hold the cue at the very end of it anyway, my hand is almost always slightly up from hte but of the cue nowadays...
what a frustrating, yet addictive game this is....

Most top pros if not all will hold the cue at the end in the same way when in the standing positioning whilst eyeing up the shot, then will slide there hand up the butt when moving into the shot there by keeping the cue in the same position all the time.
This won't make them a better potter but they know that the same part of the tip will make contact with the cue ball for any given shot. The assumption being that they will have better control/ feel through consistency of where the tip/cue is making contact and nothing more.
