Another curious question.....

Hey again....... do you know any players who began playing with their unnatural hand..... and then reverted back to their natural hand???

Reason i ask is because i play left handed (although i do everything else right)....... but i sight under my right eye, thus making my sighting and cueing quite strange according to a coach i used to use years back.......

He mentioned due to the nature of it, my cue was never going down straight on the cuein line due to me having to get the cue under my right eye.... thus slightly pulling the tip to the right of the white after i cue'd the shot.

Would it make sense for me to relearn to cue with my right arm ?? Could this explain my inconsistency ?

I personally don't buy into the dominant eye theory/conclusion that you have to have the cue directly under one eye. I believe most people use both eyes to varying degrees to aim, because most people have one slightly more dominant eye. A small number of people, those nearly blind in one eye, will have a very dominant eye.

Also, I suspect my brain favours one of my eyes for long distance and the other for short distance, plus with a small amount of concentration I can get either result on all the dominant eye tests out there.

Given all that you might think I need the cue under one eye for long pots and under the other for short ones, but I can tell you now that would cause all sorts of havok to your cue action and consistency.

So, perhaps the best answer is, place the cue in the middle, on your chin, or very slightly to one side or the other .. depending on how dominant your most dominant eye is.

Here is a good test to find out which eye you're really using for long distance pots...

- Line up a long blue into a black pocket with the cue ball on baulk. Line it up so the line of aim (the center line down the white and blue) goes to the pocket leather on the baulk cushion (this is where you should be aiming long blues BTW).

- Get down on the shot, so you feel you're lined up straight. Close one eye, and then the other.

- With which eye open, does the cue look to be pointed directly at the edge of the pocket leather?

Depending on where your cue is in relation to each eye, will give a different view of the cue and where it is pointing. I find with my left eye closed, my right eye sees the cue to the left of 'it', but the angle of the cue to my right eye looks to be directly on the line of aim, and pointing at the pocket leather. Without moving the cue, and with my left eye open I see the cue to the right of 'it' but the angle on the cue looks wrong and not pointing at the pocket leather.

That's what I see anyway, your mileage may vary

.. to go back to the Q of consistency. I think it probably doesn't matter too much where your cue is, provided you put it in the same place every time you cue up. If you do that, you will train your eyes/brain to judge the angles from the same place, and it will get better and more consistent at it. I think this is the real reason why there are so many opinions on where the 'best' place is .. the 'best' place is where you're most used to doing it, nothing more.

Do not agree that you playing left handed and right eyed is going to make it hard. Why should it matter which eye you use as long as it is the one that is dominant. I am right handed and right eyed, ronnie is left eyed and I think neil robertson is left handed and right eyed. If you want to go under your dominant eye just do it.
