  • My Experience at the SouthWest Snooker Academy

(I've FINALLY managed to get a decent internet service, 5Mb down/500Kb up, so I can now post this.)

I would like to thank everyone at the Southwest Academy for showing me such a great time. Of special mention is Janie Watkins who helped me set the whole thing up and then during my stay Paul Williams for taking care of me and getting me to the Academy each day (Janie and Paul Mount were in Sheffield for most of my stay).

Also I would like to thank all those students who came to get some coaching from me and to all of them I would like to reiterate 'KEEP IT SMOOTH'.

The Academy is a first-class facility with a total of 13 Star tables, all with #10 match cloths and all well looked after. Coming from the normal amateur environment the only two major adjustments I had to make were the speed of the tables and the tighter pockets. Even though I have a #10 on my own table at home in my basement facility, I found the Academy tables to be much faster. (I've since checked my temp/humidity in my basement and found the temp was low and the humidity too high so I'm going to install heaters similar to the Academy's and also a de-humidifier to get the humidity down to around 35-40% as it's now up around 50% which is much too high and slows the table down).

The staff of the Academy, Janie, Paul Williams, Debbie and John all were very helpful and bent over backwards to ensure my time there was enjoyable, even taking care of those weekend coaching appointments which were outside of normal business hours. I would also like to thank Paul Mount for giving me a great rate for accommodation and practice time. The accommodations were first-rate and of course so were the practice facilties.

If there are any overseas or even UK players who would like to take a 'snooker vacation' for a week or more I would highly recommend they contact Janie at the Academy and organize accommodation and practice time or even coaching time as there are resident coaches (Paul Mount is certified Terry Griffiths Matchroom) and if you really want some heavy coaching of course Terry Griffiths will likely be taking bookings although I suspect he is a very busy man so you may have to be flexible on your dates.

I enjoyed myself so much that I'm seriously thinking of doing a similar thing next year although this time I may book myself for after the Worlds and perhaps I can play in the Pink Ribbon 2012 event, or maybe even try my hand at a PTC or two if the timing is right. It all depends on how well I can save up some ready cash.

One word of warning for any overseas players. Try and book any airline OTHER than British Airways, as I took BA from Toronto and they charged me 40quid EACH BLOODY WAY for my cue case. The thing only weighed about 2.5kilos and is a 3/4-case and I would hate to think what a 1-piece case would cost as they said it was more dimensions than weight.

    Cheers,
    Terry

Just had a thought while I was checking my posts. Maybe I will try and get a couple of hours with Terry G when I'm over next year as it's always nice to get a second or third opinion and after all he IS a world-class expert coach. I've have to check with Janie to see if any Tom, Dick or Harry can book Terry at the Academy as perhaps his time will all be taken up by the 20 or so pros managed out of the Academy by Paul Mount.

I see the upcoming Pink Ribbon has over 250 players registered now and as someone said that might just be the biggest charity snooker event ever held! I wish the Academy every success for now and in the future and hope the snooker fraternity as a whole will support Paul in his quest to have a well established first-class successful snooker Academy

Sounds like you had a great time Terry (well apart from with BA)
How about dishing some dirt on the pupils who improved the most, who has no hope etc lol
Cally was saying he gave you a good run for your money in a frame .....

Well, there was no time to observe any improvement and one of the players (manu147) scared me a bit as he is an Irish (northern) International and his high match break this past season was 139! and he had his national championships coming up so I was a little leery of giving him too much although he didn't need too much anyway.

I was quite surprised by Luke Hooper and the Mayor of Flair because although they had both booked 2 hours I couldn't find anything totally wrong at all and could only honestly give them one hour apiece. It was the usual stuff with too fast a backswing, which was a general comment for all of my coaching students. Another general thing was the grip which in most cases was still too tight although the players had all read my posts on here and had loosened their grips but not loose enough (the butt of the cue should slide EASILY in the grip) Terry's quote of the day 'looser is better' and I'm applying that to grip and not to the fairer sex for those among you with their minds in the gutter!

As for cally...I gave him every opportunity to grab the frame and he even had the first shot at the black ball but finally my patience wore out and I potted the last black. My excuse was I had just had about 5 hours from Nic Barrow and was busy thinking about my technique rather than potting and position. I have to say 5 hours is much too much at one go and 2hr sessions are much better as otherwise a coach will give the student way too much to think about and try and ingrain into his technique.

In my own experience I've also found it takes a little while and over the past 2 weeks I've been working on the points Nic gave me in solo practice and they are starting to come into my natural technique and I am noticing a bit of improvement. Now all I have to do is get than ingrained by June 12th, which is when the Canadian Snooker Championships kick off in Toronto (although I failed to qualify outright this year as we put through the top 12 and I am ranked #13, but there's usually a spare spot from some other area of the country and I am the first standby, so I'm hoping and working)

In fact, ranked in #1 spot is Paul King, who is a former Northern Ireland International now living in Ontario so some players on here may recognize the name. Quite a nice guy and a very good player

Gotta love this reply, Excuses excuses eh...

Just had 5 hours from Nic eh , that was like a week before i seen you mun, so i aint taking that as any excuse sorry bud...lol...

If your gonna use excuses, heres mine then... I hadn't played for about a month when i come to see you and still run you close, (and should have had you) so i'm more than happy with that tbh...

Errrr....And you sound like you let me have the first shot on black, Not the case atall.. I earnt the 'first' shot on that black.....I needed the remaining colours to snatch frame as you were a few in front. I had the first shot on the black cos I potted the blue and pink (and the pink was a real blinder even if i say so myself) then i was left with an easy ish black to win frame and fluffed it...D'oh.

It wasn't quite like you put it and 'your patience wore out' was it now terry, we both know it wasn't like that don't we......lol.

Gotta love it when people give credit where credit is due don't ya..

Agree with everything else you said about the academy though...

              cally:

Hee, Hee...I thought that might get you going! For all reading this the truth of the matter was BOTH of us had multiple opportunities to put the frame away and we both frittered them all away. Near the end of the frame with almost no points in it Cally had a good opportunity to run blue, pink and black but failed to get on the black. I can't remember whether he played a safety or attempted a pot but he ended up leaving me a relatively simple black game ball (but to tell you the truth I can't remember how easy or difficult it was).

It took me at least a week to finally realize I was concentrating too much on what Nic had told me (addressing too far away from the cueball, backswing STILL too fast, tightening my grip too early which resulted in some upper body movement) so I resolved to work on one at a time, something I should have done from the start. So I started just concentrating on loosening my grip more and keeping my head still and I finally started playing somewhere near normal.

However, manu147 and Paul Williams did manage to stuff me quite easily during the first week but I came back a bit the second week against Paul and did manage to scrape a win in a set after he beat me 9-4 in the first set we played.

                Hi Terry,

On behalf of everyone at the South West Snooker Academy many thanks for your very kind words. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your time at the Academy and we would love to see you back again next year. I am sorry that I didn't get to meet you. I popped into the Academy briefly one Sunday whilst traveling through Gloucester but you were not there sadly-no doubt having a well earned break. From what I have heard everyone enjoyed having you at the Academy and have said what great company you were so hopefully I will get to meet you next year if you make it over. It would definitely be great if you coincided it with the Pink Ribbon and/or some PTC events.

I will be sending a copy of your post on to all at the Academy so those who are not members on here will get a chance to read it also.

Many thanks once again for taking the time to write such nice things.

Best of luck to you and hope to meet you soon.

Thank you Sarah and sorry we missed each other but it was a busy period with the Worlds going on.

I am definitely planning on coming over next year and will have to not only save up some cash but also coordinate with 'she who must be obeyed' as she also visits the UK every year (for reasons other than snooker of course), but I'm sure we can sort something out.
