  • laser used by Steve Davis during one of his training spots in the World Championships

    Greetings,

During the World Championships, Steve Davis demonstrated a straight-in shot alignment drill that used a remote-controlled laser. Did anyone see that, and does anyone know the product name?

    Thanks.

Nic Barrow had one with him when he did the coaching with me in Gloucester but unfortunately I can't remember the name of the product.

When set up right it shines right down the length of your cue and you can see right away if you're lined up correctly (thankfully I was and so we didn't use the device a lot which is probably why I can't remember it).

I will email Nic and see if he can give me the name of the product. I think it costs in the range of 70quid though

I don't see why you can't just tape a laser pen to your cue, if all you want to do is check the cue is on the correct line.

The thing about what Steve Davis was demonstrating was that you could set up a straight in shot, drop onto the line of the shot (or what you think is the line of the shot), and then turn on the laser to confirm (or deny) that you, in fact, dropped on the line correctly.

I have a chronic problem with straight in shots, and I would like to know whether it's my alignment, or my stroke, that is the likely culprit (probably both).

No, not the AngleBuddy. The laser Steve used was suspended above the table.

I don't normally like to dig ppl out but I have to say your wasting your money if the item cost £20 I would say have a bit of fun with it, but £70 to tell you if your on the line of the shot, I sure a friend could tell you the same thing for nothing. These things a normally brought made in china and I would say that it's well over priced.

I saw this post and it looked interesting so a dug around some BBC videos I recorded and managed to find it in the first one I opened! lucky!
Attached is screenshot of the remote, but unfortunately Steve's hand is in the way.
I did a search for laserline, laserline max, etc,etc but nothing came up.
If anyone finds it please let us know

                    Yep, that's it...

and, yeah, I don't go in for gimmicky "solutions" either, but this one just seems like it might actually be useful.

I didn't record any of the BBC feeds of the Championships, but I take it from your post that Steve, himself, never actually identifies the device he's using, right?

He says something like "laser line" or "laser light" but I think he was just using it as a generic term.

Reminds me of a friend of mine who brought a beat counter for his technic 1210 decks when we were learning to mix, He never did get the hang of it. lol, Stick with the tried and tested and like I said before I sure a laser pen would work just as good with a bit of tinkering.

The laser pen doesn't throw a line out... it's just a point. So, yes, it would show you what you're pointing at, but it wouldn't show you if your cue is collinear with the shot line. That's what I'm looking for.
