  • how to get the pendulum movement?

    hi terry;

    I am having difficulty to get that pendulum or piston action. What is the best way to obtain that piston movement?

    thanks

    HUFRO:

    I don't really understand why you can't do that easily nor what you're doing that prevents it. Are you dropping your upper arm prematurely? or something else?

    The 'vioilin' practice I showed you should help you develop the pendulum action you want, as you can see the upper arm and elbow as you do it

      Thanks Terry;

      I think the problem is that when feathering and backswing I can't keep the shoulder still and I notice some upper arm movement even that I try to pivot only with the elbow.

          HUFRO & snooks:

          OK, let's try an exercise which takes all the pressure of potting a ball and focuses just on the backswing and delivery.

          Take all 22 balls and place 11 on each side of the baulkline. Now, place the cueball or an object ball somewhere near the yellow spot but ahead of it by about 4in so you have a pure hand-on-the-table shot. Now pick a spot on the top pocket opposite (usually the edge of the leather) and aim, get down and feather as you normally do. Finally, do your front pause, slow backswing, rear pause and delivery ensuring you bring the hand all the way to the chest.

          Observe the cueball by staying down on the shot with the cue extended as ensure the edge of the leather exactly bisects the ball as it goes into the pocket. Work on driving with the elbow only until well after the cueball has been struck and also concentrate on where the cue is aimed at the end of the shot (should be exactly on the edge of the leather).

          Repeat this exercise once a day as necessary until you feel you are using just the elbow (actually the muscle on the back of the upper arm which drives the elbow) and ensure your grip remains loose until the hand hits the chest and then observe the cueball entering the pocket and also look down the line of the cue to see where it's pointed.

          Outside of the 'violin' exercise I can't think of anything else which will help you to take the upper arm out of the drive. It's something you should be able to do and control, especially with no object ball and pot to worry about

            HUFRO,

            Piston and pendulum movement are 2 different things. Sounds like you are trying to get a pendulum movement but your body will become tight and stressed if you are consciously trying to keep muscles still and you do not want a pure pendulum anyway as the cue will not follow the right line as it will scoop. Maybe the way to go is try and focus on the cue and bringing the cue through straight.

            Just a thought.
