  • Hi all im new and i got a question.

hello all, i have a question. can i have 2 different set of cue actions? 1 for slow shots

like push shots(drop shots or rolling the ball slowly into the pocket) and another 1 for

medium and power shots. for slow shots i use a shorter backswing and i do not open

my grip but just put all fingers around the cue and just push through with low

strength. same goes for medium strength shots. only for power shots i will have longer

backswings(feathers). and for the final backswing, i will open my grip and accelerate

through the white. and i have a request too, can anyone show me a 50+ break

focusing mainly on the grip? loads of thanks and awaiting your replies.

Terry Griffiths coaching does instruct this type of cue action, short back swing for lower power, longer for higher power; as to the closed/open fingers - yes this is also instructed by others.
Not all coaches instruct the different length, Dell Hill I think.
I am sure someone else will link you to some videos of these techniques.
    All the best
    Up the TSF! :snooker:

i think most players will alter the length of backswing depending on the shot , ie shorter backswing on close shots . Whilst some will keep a consistent length of backswing regardless of the shot .

Some will also increase the speed of feathering / backswing for power shots .

It all depends what you feel right with and what works best for you .

The coaches will probaly give you more of an insight into this .

The length of backswing is a point of debate amongst the top coaches with some advocating a long backswing all the time, like Selby, Higgins, O'Sullivan, Murphy, Hendry and a lot of the very top players (which is a good recommendation if you can master it and keep a straight backswing) while other coaches like Terry Griffiths advocate having the length of backswing proportional to the amount of power required.

If you do not learn the game right from the start with a long backswing for every shot it is very hard to master later on and I wouldn't recommend anyone over 25yrs old try and change that unless they happen to be really motivated and dedicated.

I myself use the proportional length of backswing but I teach both methods in order to give the student an option since it appears that all of the top pros with the exception of Mark Allen, Graeme Dott and Steve Davis (and maybe a couple of others) use the 'long backswing all the time' so perhaps it is the way to go if you have professional ambitions.

The most important point though is to remember to drive the grip hand through to the chest on all shots, no matter what the power and no matter if it's a pot or a safety. I have had some experienced players argue with this on slow shots especially, however it prevents the player from decelerating through the cueball which is the cause of an awful lot of missed shots.

Also, no matter what length of backswing you must keep it absolutely straight which is why some players prefer a shorter backswing since it's easier to keep it straight which is much more important the length

thanks for the detailed reply. so i have to keep one important point in my head. which is to drive the grip hand through the chest on all shots. sometimes i can do the perfect stroke. i can feel it, everything is perfect. the bridge hand, grip, stance and my stroke. i am wondering how do i get the perfect "stroke" on all of my shots.

                  norton:

The answer is one word - PRACTICE!!! - but make sure everything is right when you do practice, i.e. - slow straight backswing, straighrt delivery and drive the grip hand to the chest accelerating through and beyond the cueball

yes i agree. i have tried to play with backpause and without backpause. i do better without backpause and with a one second frontpause and then a slow backswing without backpause.

great news. today i played 2 loser punch frames. that means whoever lost had to pay for the table time. one frame which i gave the opponent an 18point lead. ended up as a fight black situation(whoever gets the black wins) after a series of safeties, i got a black

which couldnt cut to the middle pot but had a chance of a double. so i went for the double knowing my white would be safe, and won

it. in the second frame, i played against a strong opponent. who is actually my friend also. well i would say i would lose 70% the time

to him. but this frame, i gave it my all. brown as my frame ball, then continuing on blue. couldnt get good position on the pink so i played a very good safety, pink and white tight on the cushion. he left me a pink along the cushion but i cut it in so he did nt come

back to the table. felt so good. thanks for listening.
