As Terry said, this totally depends on the table and cloth you are playing on. I'm currently on No.10 match cloth, so I would place the white just under an inch from the brown and break off hitting the last red with bottom right. In doing this, I don't need much pace in the white, though as soon as it hits the cushion, the side whips it round the angles, easily missing the blue and balk colours, leaving the white normally behine the brown.

If I was to try the exact same shot on Hainsworth Smart, 9 times out of 10, i'd go in off into the corner pocket due to the different speed and grip levels of the cloth, therefore I would play just above stun with right hand side, though I also need a little more pace in my shot.

It all comes down to getting to know the reactions from various types of cloth, which in turn will affect all of your shots.

I break off slightly closer to the brown than the yellow, with quite alot of bottom right hand side aiming to hit the bottom two reds together, the cue ball then swings around the angles and comes back left of the blue.
Because im playing bottom right, it i hit it slightly hard the cue ball still finishes between baulk line and cushion, if im lucky, behind the green.
But i am very happy and consistant with my break and i would say on my home match table atleast, i finish on the baulk cushion 8 times out of 10.

It is the way i was always taught to break off by my father, so any other way feels alien to me, i guess its just a confidence thing as many people break different ways with the same good results.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, i just thought it was a good question.

        I have two breaks.

I always place the cue ball to the left of the brown and strike the cue ball hard with left hand side at 9 o'clock if you imagine the front face of the white is a clock.

I aim for the left hand side of the reds but differ in which red I actually aim for - If I want an attacking break I will hit the second red down - which tends to do a more favourable split - useful if you are playing a more open game - or my normal break is the second to last red which tends to keep the split safer- if I where to aim for the last red I would hit plain ball but because I am using side and swinging the ball around - to avoid missing the last red if the white ball threw off or my aim was slightly out I aim instead for the red above the last red in on corner of the pack and this gives me a margin of error when playing with side - so I don't miss and if I do get it wrong slightly it can still comes back safe if I hit thick or thin.

If I hit it right the cue ball then does a figure of 8 around the table hitting three cushions avoiding the blue and hopefully finishing plumb on the rail of the fourth cushion in baulk somewhere in behind the brown.

Half ball last red and treble ten on the white normally but if I'm dishing out 80 start and 2-0 up playing for a cupa, I might go up the bum

I'm pretty sure the ref would be entitled to call a foul here.
