  • Best Snooker Coaching Videos under GBP40

Hi, I am a newbie here and would like to get some advise on which snooker coaching videos to buy.

First some information about my game. I started playing snooker again after a 10 years break and would like to learn the game properly through coaching videos and self practice. Never had any lessons before, and the area I want to improve are:

    1. my cueing action (not consistent).
    2. stance (I can't seem to lower my head low enough to have my chin touching the cue.)
    3. seeing the line of aim accurately on angle shots (most important to me for now).
    4. long pots.
    5. beginner to intermediate cue ball control.

I would be happy if I can get to a point where I can have average breaks of 20 -40. So far, my highest break is 23. I don't need a full set of coaching videos that cost a lot and is target for pros, just enough so that I can achieve the areas mentioned above.

For under GBP40, I can only find Nic Barrow's '123's of Snooker' DVD. Is it the best out there or are there any other to choose from?

Your help would be appreciated. :

I think the Nic barrow dvds are very good. However, for £40 you could also have a couple of hours tuition with a good coach. The advantage of that is that it would be specific to your game.
coaching is not just for the pros

The best place to start would be youtube fella, and best of all it's under 40 quid, it's FREE...

Just type in snooker coaching and fill ya boots... theres a few vids of nic barrow coaching members of TSF on the areas you want help on, amongst LOTS of other vids to help in the areas you mention...

      Good luck with your game...

Thanks for both of your advice.

I had already watched a number of coaching videos on youtube. Some of them are quite useful. However, I cannot find videos on some of the specific areas I want to improve on, therefore I don't mind spending some money on a DVD which includes all the fundamentals, for convenience's sake.

As for tuition, I might take lessons later, after I have learned the fundamentals first and give it a bit of practice. This should be more effective because I should know more by then and what specific focus should be given, and what questions to ask, when I am with a coach. You know an hour goes very quickly and you learn very little with a coach if you are not prepared.

So is it Nic Barrow's 123 then? Another anyone know?

You could also join 'thesnookergym.com' which is Nic's website and there are some free coaching videos on there mostly on all aspects of technique and Perfect Practice Routines. You can join the bronze site for free

I don't have Nic Barrow's 123 of snooker DVD but Nic Barrow's coaching material is all very good. I suspect the good thing about his 123 of snooker DVD is that it covers all the main points for somebody who is a beginner or wants to know the basics. I'm sure it would also be good for advanced players to check over the technique and other points which can so easily be overlooked. A lot of Nic's materials go into a lot of detail and are quite comprehensive (and very good for the advanced player) but I'm sure this DVD would cover everything without over complicating things for somebody who is just learning the basics.

Another DVD I can suggest is Jack Karnehm's Understanding Modern Snooker. It was originally made as a video around 1985 but it covers everything you need to know and all the points are covered in a detailed but simple way which is just what the beginner needs. Jack has a great way of teaching and you can pick up a lot from watching it. It is obviously a little old fashioned compared to some of the more modern DVDs but that doesn't really affect it in any way. Here's the link: http://snookerscene.co.uk/shop.php?sec=prod&prod=412

There is obviously a lot of good information on this forum, but it can be easy to confuse yourself as there is a lot of stuff here. A good coaching DVD can set things out which are easy to understand and you can learn from.
