  • Accelerating through the cueball and strike the cueball near the top of accelaration?

I have a question in regards to Accelerating through the cueball and strike the cueball near the top of acceleration for different type of shots.

For example a 3/4 ball black to get position on a red on the pink spot.
Both shots below are played with the same length of back swing and same rate of acceleration through to the chest.

1st shot Stunt the cueball up pass the pink spot for the red to pot into the opposite corner pocket
Theory: This shot require the cue accelerate through the cueball to get more forward momentum to make the cueball travel up.
Approach: The way I setup for this shot is the same as most shots, with grip hand 90 degree to the grip hand and accelerate through the cueball to the chest.
Feel: This feel like I push the cueball forward

2nd shot Screw the cueball one cushion to get to red to pot into the same corner pocket
Theory: This shot require the cueball to be strike near the end of the acceleration, so more spin imparted to the cueball and less forward momentum. (So the forward momentum does not counteract the back spin)
Approach: For this shot I will setup the shot the same, but with the grip hand less then 90 degree to the elbow (a bit closer to the chest)
Same length of back swing, same accelerate through to the chest, but the cue will hit the cueball near the end of the acceleration.
Feel: This feel like I am giving the cueball a sharp jap

Is this the correct theory and is my approach to the 2nd shot ok?

Well I am not sure if I should comment on this as I am not the expert here and lets wait till Terry and other seniors can comment. But all that i can add from my experience is that we are all supposed to approach almost all shots in the same manner in order to allow the straight delivery of the cue stick towards the ball on every shot. If you change your approach on different shots then there is a tendency that you will not be able to deliver the cue straight. So my guess is that question 2 and your approach thing there might not be correct...

The pre-shot setup, feathering, stance grip bridge backswing pause delivery follow through etc shall all be the same for every shot if you require to master a consistent straight delivery...!

Sidd has it correct. There would be no reason to change your timing and rhythm (and set-up in your case) for any different positional shots and you should drive the grip hand through to the chest on every shot.

Normally, to answer your question I would take the positional shot that allowed me to use the least power, in this case the stun up for the red in the opposite corner as the screw shot does require a lot more power and any time you increase the power on a shot you decrease the accuracy.

Except when the balls are very close together or you are playing off the cushion there is no reason to bring your grip forearm forward on the cue and ahead of the vertical

        Sidd and Terry:

Thanks for the reply to clear up this confusion I had for a long time.
I agree in changing the setup will effect the timing of the shot and lead to inconsistency.

I will try to setup the same way for 2nd shots and experiment with different rate of acceleration then report back.
