  • What is wrong?help

    Hi, everyone.

I started playing American pool on chinese style table which has american pool table size with snooker table cloth in 2007 in china. I was regarded as a talent player and within two years I had reached a high level where I got several university champions in Beijing . From 2009 I started to play snooker. I love to play snooker but couldnt perform as well as american pool, not even 20% of it. I don't know why I can't play as naturally as it.

Currently I practice a lot and can make easily line up century. The problem is that I can't even make a 50+ in a friendly match. I am playing perfectly in every single shot in practice line up, however, in frames, I can't find that feeling. Can anybody tell me why does it happen? And with more practice, I found that I don't know how to play at all! Especially after a coaching course which pointed me with some mistakes. I feel uncomfortable and unconfident in every shot. Can anyone help me find that feeling? Or it is just because I am working on improvement and I haven't got used to it?
    I wanna play more matches!

    Luan:

If you are thinking about your technique when playing matches then it will degrade your performance.

My suggestion would be to go and see Nic Barrow in Milton Keynes for some coaching lessons and video analysis. Nic will outline a plan for you (likely in the technique area) which will help you to start improving right away

Thanks, Terry. I will see what I need and manage coaching lessons.

In snooker, while practicing specially line up u can make century or more, because the position is pre-determined. However in matches the position is determined by our openent. Hence in matches making breaks is not so easy. Capitalizing each chances are more important. Here is the difference between professionals and ametuers. After line up practise u should keep the red balls cross to pink ball and remaining four balls in baulk line, try to make break. then keep the red ball all around in the table, try to make century break. when ever u miss try to start again. After mastering this, u should keep six red balls behind pink and remaining nine balls around pink and black, try to make maximum break by opening the bunch of six balls. Then keep nine balls behind pink and remaining balls around pink and black, try to make maximum break by opening the bunch. Then keep 12 balls behind pink and three balls free, try to make maximum break, finally keep 14 red balls behind pink and only one red ball free, try to pot the free red ball and make position for black in such a way to open the bunch and make maximum break even try for 147 also. If u practise this type drill, one day u will become world professional champion. Good luck, I will wait to hear Luan as a world champion.

Certainly practicing matches is the best way to improve at snooker, however you MUST have a good basic technique to build on and to improve rapidly

That's because your're probably good enough at US pool not to be concerned too much whether you will pot a ball or not, your main focus is on correct angle for next shot. Not that pool is easy, it certainly isn't, but it is much harder to achieve that sort of confidence at snooker, because margins for error are so much smaller. Just a tiny cueing fault can cost you so many points. Compared to snooker, US pool simply isn't anywhere near as demanding on one's cue action. Players who play both games sometimes forget that.

Yeah, I do think so. I didn't notice the importance of cue action in snooker and after some coaching lessons I found that. Cheers.
