  • butt diameter and the grip

    hello guys

i like cues with slim butt, therefore ordered a custom made cue with 28mm butt

however i am finding that occassionaly i form a tiny gap between thumb-index ring and the cue

i use a lose grip but i found that i perform better with a slightly(only a bit) tighter grip, especially with potting blue to the corner pocket from the baulk line, i think perfor better with a slightly tighter grip because its still lose but not too lose which results all the fingers keeping in touch with the cue during the backswing rather than going away from it, but meanwhile its not too tight to create tension in the muscles.

i also think this might me further enhanced by a normal or ideal butt diameter which is 30mm but after potting some nice longrange blue i fancy a 31mm butt.

gonna do some trial error with different butts and will let my cue maker know by end of this week.

Can any of you please tell me if there is anything i am doing wrong?

I would say butt diameter is associated both with the size of the hands and also what a player feels comfortable with.

Before ordering another new cue though I think what I would try is to buy one of those digital micrometers for 12GBP and take it to a club and measure the house cues until I found one at 30mm and 31mm and try them out for comfort in the hand.

My first custom made cue was ordered with a 31mm butt,my second c/m cue was 29.84mm, the difference was huge !!
After playing with the new cue for 6 months I sold the first cue because it felt like I was playing with a broomstick.
My new c/m order is for 28-29mm.
When one considers the size of a surgeon's scalpel " butt " and the precision work it is required to do,the manufacturers do not offer a size option.
I suggest you take your time, a Cue is a delicate instrument.

Some expensive trial and error there OP *wink*

Take your time to find what size suits your grip best, a slight change feels very different.
