  • Cause of cue ball chipping when playing hard screw?

Hi all, I play a screw shot the majority of the time just fine, but occasionally when I try a big one I sent the cue ball either over the object ball or off the table completely!

Any ideas why? 2 things that I thought it might be was hitting cd ball too low or not enough chalk on the tip?

You are playing with a scooping action and not hitting straight through the ball.

Cause. When you 'try a big one', you are trying to hit the ball too hard. This results in a loss of control of your action.

    Solution. Hit the ball softer.

Oh.... and always chalk your cue.

    Cheers.

You are probably tightening the grip as well and that leads to the tip dipping into the cue ball rather than striking your intended point. Relax the grip and don't dip into the white. Hope that helps.

Cause of cue ball chipping when playing hard screw?

I have been chipping the ball when trying to put backspin on the ball.

I'm hoping it was the new tip I put on and have given it a more rounded shape to see if that helps. Haven't had a chance to try it yet.

I know I can play with spin (top and bottom) with ease and have been practicing potting the blue and running back / forward. But the other day the cue ball would literally jump the object ball.

        Any tips for a novice?

Lewis Most importantly when you want to Screw Back you must hit the Cue Ball at the bottom but you must keep the Cue as parallel to the cloth as possible and deliver the Cue smoothly thru you may have to lower your bridge hand as you do not want to hit the Cue Ball digging down at an angle.

It is very important that you hit the Cue Ball as Straight as Possible but below the centre of the Cue Ball and not Dig down on it ok.

You do see alot of People Raising there Bridgehand to Screw Back and Digging Down on the Cue Ball then what Happens "They Jump the Cue Ball or Miss Cue!

Hope this helps Lewis and Good Luck.

Don't aim so low on the cue ball. About 1cm from the bottom of the cue ball is about as low as you would ever need to go.

People think the lower they hit the cue ball the more backspin they will get, but that's not necessarily true. Striking the cue ball just below center can give you plenty of backspin as long as you cue through the ball sweetly. Also it makes it impossible to chip the ball.

Okay cool, I was further lowering the area on the cue ball I was striking in an attempt to gain further backspin so I think this tip will also help.
