  • level of progress for a 4-5month player

hi guys, i have been playing for 4-5months. averaging 2-3 days a week. 1 day = 2-3hour of play.
I been reading alot and watching alot of videos. So far my standard of play is around 1-2 red with a colour on good breaks. highest break is 16.
How am i doing, am i far behind? no personal cues.

If you put up a video, we can get a good understanding of where you are at. 16 is a good start and you should keep working at it. A lot of shots may be difficult and you aren't sure how the CB reacts quite yet, but over time, it will become familiar. Have a look at some writeups I have done also at http://snookerdelight.com/all-snooker-articles/

    Start with this one: http://snookerdelight.com/snooker-ar...er-life-cycle/

Also have a look at some good practice drills as applied to the junior players in China. I'm not sure if it's World Snooker certified but it's an excellent path to follow: http://www.snooker-sportclub.com/dong.html

You should try and spend at least half your time on the practice table and not in match play at this stage. The match play teaches you about your mind while practice teaches you about your mechanics and endurance.

Not one, I will put up a video next time, dont worry! I do get those super shots quite often. Last week, in match play, managed to cut a ball. 2-4 cm out of cushion. near green pocket to black pocket. judd trump style! I could visualize my shot, but execution fails me for much of the time!!

Hi Qwer, I just started playing again as well. Been playing 5 months after a 15-20 year absence from the game. My old best break as a teenager was 75. I try to practice now 2 or 3 times a week and got a 97 break in a line up and a 92 in a practice frame. I am really pleased i've given the game another go as i'm enjoying it so much now. Keep practicing and you will see the improvement. Good luck.

Oh, just noticed you said you don't have a personal cue. Definitely recommend you get one ASAP. Start with something inexpensive if you don't have the budget. Best to get a simple one piece Ebony/Ash, hand or machine spliced. Lots of good starter cues available here on TSF also but if you have a local shop, consider buying a new club cue for yourself.

The theory is that if you use the same cue every time you practice/play you will become used to it's weight and balance and progress faster. If you're using very similar club cues every time then you're probably ok.. but, if they're cheap, varnished cues then they will not play/feel as nice as a better oiled/handmade cue. You can get relatively cheap, well made, non-varnished cues if you look around a bit.

As nrage stated, it makes progress easier and faster when you are using the same cue. Each cue - even 2 identical looking cues - has it's own characteristics and personality so finding one that suits your hand will give you more confidence which will in turn help your game. If there is one particular O'min cue in the club that you really like, ask the club owner if you can buy it from them and then store it away in a locker or take it home with you and tend to it.

Where are you located? If you are in Great Britain, there are plenty of choices. Some of the senior members here are located in other parts of the world like Canada, USA, Germany, Europe, etc.

How much does snooker cost for you guys? at my site here, 10dollar per hour.
2 MacDonald's meal for 1 hour of snooker.
                      cue's kinda expensive.
the omin cue here is good. but the tip is not that nice......

Hi Qwer, i am from sg too. Great to see u here. Good to know more folks from sg who love the game of snooker. The popularity for the game seems like dying off. Where do you usually play?
