  • Help with my stance

    Hey all,
I'm having a bit of trouble with my stance. Two problems really; I feel I have the cue too high above the cushion and I always am leaning to the right whenever I get down to the shot - being a right hander I have my right foot on the line of the shot and every time I get down my weight is always on the outside of my foot. My feet are more or less shoulder width apart.

Now I know it seems like an easy fix - you'd think just get down lower to the table and adjust so that my weight on my right foot is spread more neutrally, but I just can't seem to do it. Having looked at myself in a mirror I am always leaning to the right, and the only way I've solved this is first getting down as I normally would, and then having to lean slightly to the left afterwards. This is something I have to do consciously and not something you want to be doing in a match; you just want to be able to get straight down to the shot.

As for the second problem I CAN get myself lower to the table but this ends up pushing my grip arm shoulder outwards, causing the elbow to move out of alignment with the cue. I recently corrected a fault where my elbow hung in towards my body by getting the left shoulder up against my left cheek which helped to rotate my grip arm shoulder into the middle of my back. Getting down lower to the table reverses this somewhat - I have tried to get lower to the table and get the shoulders rotated at the same time but it takes quite a bit of exertion!

Is it just a case of keeping adjusting my weight each time so it might eventually become natural to me when I first slide into the stance ? And as for the getting lower to the table, is this a case of gradually getting lower and lower with the shoulders 'rotated' until it requires less exertion and is more natural? Or is there a simple fix for it? I really am at a loss so any advice would be so so so appreciated.

    Cheers

Some images or a video would help us see what you're currently doing. Ideally the video would be of you walking into the shot from behind and another from the side (right-hand side), and probably head on also so we can really see where the cue is pointing as any changes to stance will likely affect cue alignment.

    Have a look at:

Does your stance look like that? Or are you leaning more to the right? Is your right leg straight? Is it on an angle/lean to the left, and/or backward or forward? Is your left leg bent? How much weight (percentage) would you estimate is on the left leg?

Why don't you try placing your right foot outside the line of the shot. As a tall bloke (six foot two) I do this and place my left foot wider than a shorter bloke would in order to get my body down lower to the table while still keeping my cue on the line of the shot.

The correct solution here is to bend the left leg more and get the LEFT armpit down as close to the table as comfortable. This will raise the RIGHT shoulder and keep the elbow aligned and will also help distribute the weight equally between the two legs
