Cue Holding Position

Hi Coaches,

Wanted to find out that is it true that we have to hold the cue all the way at the butt cap? Another thing is that is it better to always hold the badge side of the cue flat with your palm( I mean like always hold the cue facing the same side).?

No, you don't have to hold the cue all the way at the end (butt cap). When you hold the cue in the address position with the cue almost touching the white, your grip hand forearm should be almost vertical <- this is the important detail. So, depending on how long your bridge distance is (from cue tip to bridge hand) and how long your cue and arms are, this might mean you are several inches up from the end of the cue.

Shifting the grip hand up/down the butt by an inch or two should therefore mean a similar shift in the bridge distance, though typically it happens the other way round in that you're forced to play with a shorter bridge, so you should shift the hand up the butt of the cue to compensate and keep the forearm vertical. If you don't the balance of the cue will change and it will feel different.

Most people find that 1-2 inches from the end feels good and gives them some freedom to make the bridge longer where necessary. Some people like their hand at the end and so get a custom cue made to their measurements, but then have to use an extension or cue forward of vertical on some shots. Small deviations like this are personal preference, but the important point is to be as close to vertical on the grip forearm for most of your shots.

Holding with the badge up/down or even sideways should make no difference and is personal preference. I would say that doing the same thing on every shot and keeping it consistent is a good idea.
