Never chalk across the line of the tip, always ensure that you chalk your tip in a completely straight line. If you consistently chalk across the line of your tip it will be really difficult to undo this later as this fault in your chalking technique will be inbuilt and very difficult to get rid of even with the appropriate technical changes and lots of practice.
good advice Gerry but you're missing out the most important part ... how to grip the chalk ... I think it's absolutely vital to hold it in the webbing of your thumb and first finger (no air gap) with a loose (but not too loose) grip ...
and I've also found after years of experimenting, it's easier if the chalk points downwards (towards your smaller fingers) ... I used to do it with the chalk pointing upwards which seemed the most obvious way but people used to laugh ...
i chalk while sat down that way my rhythm is never effected i also dont hold the cue when i chalk i balance it on my foot you probably need the chalk 3 times in a break unless ur peter ebdon who seemed to have chalking ocd

We don't usually have chairs to sit down on so that wouldn't work lol, plus 3 times in a break ????? yeah if your only potting 3 balls maybe !!!
You should really chalk for every shot, every person who i know does, not worth risking a mis cue at all

Why are you playing "fast" ............ i never knew it was a race
Can you name me one pro who doesn't chalk for every shot ???? (you probably will now lol, but it's NOT the norm !)

The cross shape or 4-pointed star is very common with snooker players at least as it means you are correctly 'wiping' the chalk across the tip and mining the chalk by hold it still and twirling the cue. (I have a star on my chalk and when I start to see dark lines on the edge of the points of the star I file the chalk down a bit so I can keep using it.)

Thanks for this response Terry. My worry is removed ... So now I can relax thinking that there is at least one thing I am doing proper when it comes to playing snooker

Also, remember that you should be looking AT the object tip, not the pocket.
I wonder, what length chalk do most people use, I find my finger tips slipping up the chalk the closer I am to the table?
