  • Follow Through Help

    Hi All

Below are two clips of my cueing arm!

The first clip is how I cue on at present, I know this is in need of a few tweeks here and there and once I have improved the amount of follow through I will work on it!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXXURdv6r0M&feature=plcp

The second one is just an example of where I think the shot should finish (a lot further in the chest) after watching several other top players.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oQlEOX0c_o&feature=plcp

I have tried and tried to get the cue to go further through so my hand ends up further up my chest. Nothing seems to work my cue just stops in the position in the first clip, therefore only getting 2-3 inches of follow through. All I can guess at is my arm/stance is not correct therefore not allowing my hand to go higher into my chest.

    Any advise please?

HI my tuppence worth on why you cant get through the shot is this, on your backswing you drop your elbow which to me looks fine(only my opinion mind) but on the follow through you actually pull your elbow upwards and end the stroke with your elbow even higher than where it started, this leaves no room for your hand to get further through the shot, have a look at clips and watch your elbow in both and see the difference, as i say only my opinion and the coaches on here will have better advice.

Agree with itsnoteasy. You are going up into the chest with your grip giving you a short follow through. I know the video does not show it but sometimes this can be caused by actually striking the white lower than where you aim. The dipping tip can only be caused by lifting the butt causing you to finish high up into the chest. Make sure you aim where you intend to strike and keep the cue on the same plane as you pull it back. When you deliver the cue follow the plane and your grip should finish lower down. You can also practice without a white and then examine where on your chest your grip needs to finish. Then play as normal remembering to finish the shot at this same point. Hope that helps

A good memory trick to resolve this (besides what has been said above) is to try and hit the OBJECT BALL with the tip of the cue (unless the balls are only 6in apart that is). Keep the grip loose and when you're practicing this keep the grip REALLY loose, to what seems a rediculous amount and KEEP IT THAT WAY until AFTER you strike the white.

If a player drops the elbow on his backswing (usually longer ones) then at the start of the delivery the elbow should return to where it was in the address position and stay there until well after the strike when it will drop at the very end of the delivery.

You could also try Trump's trick for when he plays a power shot...when you first get down into the address position and before you start feathering pull the cue up into the chest until you're actually flexing the cue on the bridge, chin and chest. Then relax that again but keep the elbow up as high as possible during the feathering and don't allow it to drop during shorter backswings and then only at the end of longer backswing allow it to drop.

I know this is a lot easier said than done as you've probably ingrained this technique into your delivery especially. The amount of follow-through you can get can be measured by the distance between the front of the grip hand and the spot on your chest where the hand hits when in the address position. This follow through distance will increase a bit if you drop the elbow at the end of the delivery

          Hi Terry,

Thanks for the reply, I'll try the memory "OBJECT BALL" trick next time I practice.

Find that elbow drop at the end really difficult has my hand just seems to stop, guess like you say I am lifting the but slightly therefore the hand, because at the moment if I try to drop the elbow the cue just goes up at the tip end.

          Regards Repy.
