  • Coaching Session Boooked for Friday

So after a few months of pain, and frustration I have booked a coaching session with Bob Hill WPBSA Coach in Bristol, for this Friday, looking forward to it, lets see if I am as bad as i think i am, main problem is consistency, i too often follow a great shot with a bad one, and seem to struggle to put a break together, less from a position POV more from a get the ball in the pocket POV. No amount of reading on here and watching videos is going to help me so i hope this will be a good experience and help me change my game.

It's a good start that your honest with yourself and your game..

Enjoy the coaching, let us know how you get on. Get the session well documented so you can catch up on things you may forget about.

Don't mind at all, for individuals it is £10.00 per 30 minute session, i am having a session of 45 minutes, and so is my son on the same night, i thought the prices were excellent, the guy is from my area so not too much travelling involved, and he is coming to my club, i wanted a bit of table familiarity, although I actually have no idea if that makes any difference from a coaching POV

I wouldn't recommend Big Del or his son. I went down with my friend 2 years ago and he immediately said to my friend to change his cue action. He advertise ronnies cue action like his own one. By saying he made ronnie who he is which is bull ****.

The cue action Del Hill use called *Drive* and you will have to drop your elbow to drive. It will automatically force you to move on the medium strength or any power shots. Most of the players stop at the chest and it called packing Judd Trump is a packer and who can say his cue action is wrong or bad. In my eyes his cue action is one of the best.

Anyway if you beginner you have nothing to loose and it will improve your game for sure. But remember Ronnie is not a good example to watch or copy his cue action as he made the game look very easy due to his natural potting ability and knowledge of the angles. I think Ding is one of the easiest to copy and his cue action is a text book.

Sorry not aware of any of the history, and i guess that is your post is your opinion, all i did was look for a coach in Bristol on the WPBSA website, i will reserve judgement until after the session, if my game improves i will be happy, and as for the pros action being right or wrong who is to say what is right, in my opinion if the sessions gets me results, it is right, if it does not i lose a few quid, and either put it down to experience, or find another coach.

Yeah watch Ding and copy his action; in my opinion it's the best in the game.

Higgins' cue action is also very good but his pull-back just before the shot is exaggerated compared to his feathers so I wouldn't copy this part as it can lead to all sorts of movement on the follow through - trust me I've tried.

I had a lesson with Bob at Rileys a fair few months ago, it helped me for sure. Can't share the link as I'm on my phone, but just look at my threads in my profile and you should see it. 'Lesson with Bob Hill' or something like that.

Also Del Hill is no relation of Bob I'm sure.

Hi X53, I think your getting your del's mixed up and I think the term he uses is pecker not packer lol. Although there is some truth to what you say with regards to his teaching methods. I think del is guilty of being a one trick pony, but this depends what camp your in, I've was always a driver so his idea's suited me. I would imagine that if you were a pecker you wouldn't be happy with del's approach. Still let and let live

yep that sounds right ... in his training videos, Del Hill refers to his son Tom ...

and on the World Snooker page for Bob Hill, Bob refers to Del Hill as Del Hill and not Daddy ... http://www.worldsnooker.com/page/New...452116,00.html

I agree with the 'drive' although Del was not the originator of this term, Joe Davis was. There is no need to get any upper body movement when you drive the cue (in other words, accelerate through the cueball). It demands a length of backswing which is proportional to the amount of power required for the shot and a smooth delivery.

If you attempt to drive through the cueball using a too short backswing you will usually get upper body movement and in addition you will tighten the grip too tight and too early in order to get the required acceleration and this will also take the cue off-line.

So had the first session last night, 45 mins each for me and my son, what a revelation, i go from missing every other pot to consistent potting of 6 or more balls, and not just straight ones either.

The main points he picked up on after about 10 minutes were:-

Stance, i had my hips twisted, and left leg too far forward, so i was cueing across the cue ball, meaning as i had seen many times constant misses just to the left of a pocket.

Grip, a bit too loose, and holding the cue too far back, so cueing arm was not following all the way through, i now have a piece of tape on the butt of my cue, but who cares if it helps.

Good points, chin on cue, bridge length was already good, follow through was good, but affected by cueing arm as above.

All in all a very satisfying experience, now i just need to practice, practice, practice, another session already booked for one months time.

I would recommend the services of Bob to anybody.
