  • Off table comments and their impact

When we play in local clubs we have to go through the pain of having an audience that is not all the time considerate and understanding. This really hurts but ten one has to carry on under such conditions at the club level. No escape form it and for a person like me it sort of really bothers and I do not know why I listen to that at times and then it impacts in an awkward manner.

I was playing yesterday and was playing well when a mate looking at the game commented to me saying hey sidd when you play your grip feels too loose looking at it from the back .. so loose that it feels as if the cue is going to slide off from your hand like when you deliver the cue then at the end of the delivery it looks as if your cue will slide off from your hand so grip it properly ... now i know we have to keep the grip loose enough while striking and if at the end of the delivery my cue is still loose and looks as if it is going to slide (but it never slides off and that is the point) so this means that i am keeping it loose enough .. right or not?

However his words kept echoing in my ears and I intended to keep it proper and unintentionally started keeping my fingers firm at the end of the delivery .. but then something funny happened... while doing that i made a break of 54 and thought to myself maybe he was right... but then afterwards my game went down to zero and i couldnt pot properly and consistently till the next many frames and then i kept on training my brain to forget what he said and what happened and go back to my normal thing but well that was rather hard to get to... but then in the end in the last frame while having a loose grip i made a break of 48 ... !!! but i am afraid when i go in again tonight i will be confused with the grip again ... what to do and how to keep the grip proper .. no idea no clue and scared.... comments, guidence, suggestions and advice needed guys !!!!!!

P.S. Another comment one person made was that during my backswing my cue butt gets raised ... I keep my fingers relaxed and open them properly while doing the backswing .. then why this comment? dont know really...!!!

a quite firm but polite offer of the cue and say do you want to play my game for me instead then usually shuts them up....

Just play your game. There's no right or wrong when it comes to technique. If it works for you then it's right, if it is causing you problems then make tweaks but only when it's necessary.

Just tell them to go get their cue and bring their wallet and play a set or two for a ton of cash.

Or else tell them you are getting great coaching from the best coaches in the world on TSF and you're going to stick with it, thank you very much

Thanks for the feedback and comments guys... I indeed did that really

Terry: Yesterday I was playing really well in full swing- developing big break chances but then missing easy pots in 30s and 40s but i was winning all the frames like my tactical game has improved a lot really so even if I am not making big breaks i am still winning. That same guy once again made the same remark hey sidd you are missing cuz your grip hand is so loose that it feels as if your cue butt is going to slide off and then I said hey does it slides off? no! then just let me be as per my coach's recommendations... they were surprised and said ahan what coach u have (in a taunting manner) and then when I replied its Terry Davidson international professional coach through TSF they were totally in shock ... so i said now please dont comment that you know this game better than him cuz we all know you dont hence they remained quiet afterwards and I played really well. In the end I didnt pay any money since I won all frames (9 of them) and only paid for the 2 cups of tea

By the way Coach: How did it go for you in Sofia ??? updates please...

You need to develop a thick skin. Because when you're playing in club with more than a few players, there are always going to be comments, some in your face, but most behind your back. Some well meant, others not so much.

              +1

The best way to achieve this thickness of skin, is to take part in a few eight ball pool counties weekend events . .

If you can survive this, your ready to take a penalty in the world cup final . . LOL

                Sidd:

Sofia doesn't start until November 24th. All the information, including the draws are now up on the IBSF website.

I note I'm in the same group as Darren Morgan who has won the Masters twice I believe and has also won this year's European Masters WITHOUT DROPPING A FRAME! (I think I read somewhere).

I will be there to have a good time, play at least 4 good matches and also to network a bit for my coaching business (such as it is)

Hi Terry, I noticed your grouped with Darren Morgan (who did by the way did drop a SINGLE frame in the EuroMasters )
But I did read that the top 3 of each group go through to the knock-out round
Question for you, have you heard/found anything about any TV/streaming of any matches of this event?
I ahve not been able to fidn anything

                    DeanH:

The IBSF site has a button for live scoring and in the narrative they say they will be streaming 3 tables but I think the tables are random as it will depend on when one is available for the next match I imagine as they are running a lot of matches daily.

Also, you are correct, in the same narrative they say the top 3 from each group go through to the individual knock-out stages so with Darren in my group it looks like the rest of us will be battling for 2nd and 3rd. Maybe I'll luck out and get to the last 32...I sure hope so as it's a long way to travel for 4 round robin matches but I'm sure it will be enjoyable as there are a lot of players in both the men's and masters that I know from the 'old' days

They say everything will be on the IBSF.info website. I don't know if I'll have computer access as I'm not taking my laptop and I'm not sure if the hotel has any available. I'll have my Blackberry on WiFi for email but I haven't tried it on the internet with WiFi so I don't know how it will work, so I might be out of touch until December 4th or so.

                      cheers for the reply Terry
I will have a closer look at the info site and as you say, it could be pot-luck if we get to see you on TV
I am not an expert on phones but if you have WiFi for your email you can do internet as well through the same signal.
I recently got a new smartphone and now have TSF through my phone, had to create a googlemail account to get the download, but I have had nothing come from that (which is great) and the TSF works well on the mobile
Thanks to Kevin (ferret) for his patience at that time.

                      cheers

ps, check with the hotel if they have free wifi in and around the hotel, most do nowadays

Good Luck Terry! I noticed that you have scored a practice 147 - well done mate!

I am sure TSF members will be hoping you do well.

                        : )
My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
                        I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

Yep Terry, good luck and keep the fight up!

I do have a pretty hard skin when it comes to that; its just that I cant help ignoring comments particularly about my technique but I would improve on that as well; Went in yesterday played bad, I had driven in my car for more than 350 KM past night and day but still went in. Played bad lost but was sure it was due to being tired and then while leaving and in the last frame I really went in to the zone and smashed the opponent (that same commenting freak) and he was shocked... I smiled at him and said; hey mate you are really lucky; I was so damn tired LOL
