Hi, was practicing on a different table(just been recovered)at the club, and noticed that when playing straight blues with what would be stun on my old table 7, was giving me around a foot of screw back on this new cloth, i was getting my usual 7/8 out of ten then decided to screw back to hit top cush off straight blue(dont know why . had gone a bit practice loopy by then) i could only make one in ten(hitting the cush was easy though lol), i didnt feel as if i was doing any thing overtly wrong but i obviously was, so my question is to the good players, is do you consider maximum power what you can achieve or is it played within yourself for consistency , i know that sounds obvious, but do you practice with full power till its right or play with say 3/4 power as its easier.

what is maximum power
I never play a shot in any way that would only serve to end the break. Always play the percentages. Usually there's more than one way to play a shot so think of alternatives and if the amount of power needed is very likely to make you miss then don't play the shot that way. A miss guarantees end of break whereas running out of position doesn't always necessarily mean end of break
This is my match play game. I play these type of shots lots in practice as this is the arena were you learn your limitations.
Good luck

Your maximum power should be controlled. If it was just power then big blokes with muscles would just wack the balls about. However doing this ensures no accuracy. The players with good cue power are good because they can get vast amounts of spin using timing and still pot the balls ie judd, robertson, lee etccoaching is not just for the pros

I am not throwing myself at the ball, but i was obviously moving on the shot, i was just wondering if it was something that was practiced or if the good guys were just naturals at it and the rest play within themselves
thanks for the replies Poona and Gav.This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

If we use the Power measurement of P1 to P10 with P10 being the maximum power index then the definition for maximum power, or P10, is somewhat different for everyone.
P10 is the maximum power which can be applied by a player while still maintaining his accuracy. To measure your own (it might depend on the speed of the cloth) then try and 'shoot the spots' and see how many lengths of the table you can get while still having the cueball within one ball width of the brown spot.
On my table it's easy for me as I get almost 5 lengths of the table so every 1/2 of a length is one graduation of power, so P1 is brown to pink spot, P2 back to the baulkline, P3 down to the blue/pink area and so on.

I enjoyed the trip to Bulgaria very much, even though I was unable to qualify out of my round robin group. I re-met a lot of players I used to play with when I was in Britain and I really enjoyed watching how the best amateur players in the world played and was busy looking at the technique of all of them and came up with some common elements which I hope will help me with my students and myself.
