Been playing 8 ball pool too a very high standard now for about 3 or 4 months, before that for some reason i was very hit and miss with my standard, but very recently dropped back to that standard and couldn't work out why, then i realised i had changed my tip and put a new one on, so thought it might be this, i had just stuck it on and shaped it up a bit but it was still quite a big muchroom shape tip which i don't normally use, the tips i prefer are usually smaller which i find is better but you have to be more accurate with them and might get more miscues, anyways i had some sandpaper in my case so decided to take loads of it and get it back to how my other tip was before taking it off, it is quite small now and round, played with it and immediately my game had improved, didn't miss so many shots and my long shots we're more accurate, didn't think a tip being bigger would cause such problems, but it totally ruined my game, so must remember to take lots of the tip in future when i put a new tip on, i just thought i'd leave it and play with it first but i guess this was a mistake, anyone else experienced this with a new tip before taken the tip down to how you like to play with it, didn't think it would make much different but it sure did.

Check out Mike Woolridge's video he posted on re-tipping on this site it was very nice of him to take the time to do this for the site and is an excellent resource, I've read that Steve Davis(by choice) played with a mushroomed tip, in America they typically play with a dome shaped with a curvature similar either to their 5 or 10 cent coins its quite common to see their cues fitted with 13mm tips where in the UK it often seems from what I've read on this site you often play with tips smaller than those typically used in snooker I'm assuming it has something to do with the size of the balls but I'm only speculating
