  • Ah the Groove- the Zone- that Groovy lil Zone

    Hi all.

So after getting hold of my 'hold' on the butt proper, consistent and nice (all thanks to the great Terry); I am enjoying the game again and playing with better consistency. This makes me not to think about the grip or anything else in terms of technique during the game and hence I can concentrate more on the shot in hand and try to keep my eyes locked on the contact point on OB and hence play with better results.

This is a small update inviting interesting comments from everyone concerning what they call the GROOVE or the ZONE. Well to begin with, I have been there on some occasions including two nights ago. How do i define that moment hmmm well its pretty hard but well its a state of mind where you are no longer thinking about literally anything at all and just imagining the result of a shot and getting it practically without any bit of effort. Its all automatic as if implanted in the brain. After playing like that if I try to recall what was I doing while being there hmmm well nothing literally nothing comes to mind and thats the beauty of it really... Once in the groove or the zone you play like a pro then afterwards you try to think on what was it that made you do so hmmm nothing comes to mind you cant remember the grip or backswing or follow through or anything that helped you while being there...

Last time i was there well its amazing to even write about it so last time when I was there I was playing my ninth and last frame (decider in a care to 5 being 4-4 equal) I was a few points ahead and there were only 4 reds available... he went in-off and I took it from the baulk. When I played the red and the brown I only felt one thing and I can tell you with all my faith that it is really what I had never felt before: I felt that I was getting more contact with the tip against the white like the tip contacted the white for a fraction longer as in slow motion (just felt like that) I was surprised but I carried on and on every shot I had the same feeling (the awareness about grip cue tip sound of contact the contact itself- everything sort of subsided and all i could feel was the greater longer contact on the white with the tip) I went on and cleared the table hahaha with a break of 45. Trust me the reds were not set up it was a difficult chance but something happened and i cleared them off. Cant be much happier ever i guess. Even the yellow was on spot brown off spot and the green hmmm green was tight against the black and available in only one corner pocket. I took the yellow with deep screw wanted to spin the white back on its path in to the side cushion then top cushion behind black and then higher than black for the green in that particular corner pocket... i calculated this went of rthe shot and guess what inch-perfect position as imagined (this is crazy) then took the green with screw and check side to take the bottom cushion and on the way back come off the bottom cushion and be in the centre area for that hard brown... the rest were on spots.

i think they call it timing the ball sweetly or timing. Once in the zone you time well or in other words you go in the zone becasue you are timing well. But how to achieve that well beyond my imagination.... I went to play the other night and yesterday as well and tried to manipulate that longer contact with white feeling but it wasnt there I tried throughout the time on every shot but it wasnt there. Guess it cant be done on purpose right?

Last but not the least; I cleared that table in not more than 5 minutes trust me guys .... I am not like THE ROCKET but maybe i was a small calibre bullet at that time for sure I have noted that while playing at the top of my form I play fast and quick really quick. I sometimes try to think on slowing down so I dont make an error but its beyond my control at that point in time.

Your comments on the zone - the groove- that groovy lil zone anticipated...!!!

I am like you Sidd in that I enter the zone unknowingly and only for brief moments. Last time I was there I had a 59 clearence that took only about two minutes, probably less. I looked up at my playing partner and said, "easy game isn't it" and his jaw was on the floor and he asked where the hell that came from. Fact is that now and again it comes to me, I don't know where from or where it goes but when it happens I see the ball so clearly that I just can't miss. Then I think about what's happening to me and I do miss, everytime.

But how to deliberately get myself into that mental state of no thought without having to wait for it happen, and staying there, is the real question and one that I haven't found the answer to and at my age now it's too late.

      Good to hear, Sidd.

Sounds like your keeping it natural and not trying toooo hard.

That is a problem while your in the zone, you look back on the session and think why. Having my own table I do stop and think "now lets bottle this" and the only thing I can think is that I am playing my own "natural game", hence everything is flowing smoothly.

      Keep it up, bud.

I the zone: To me is a head thing when your concentrated and focused. Though it can incorporate everything and some would call on it as an outer body experience. In the grove: When your flowing technically, your feet are set properly and on balance every time, your coming back then pushing through - hitting straight and your sighting and timing the ball well. This would be the blueprint for most ball games.
And its great when it all comes together

          So very true guys.

Thanks Throtts... yes I am enjoying my game after a very long time. This is the time where winning of loosing has stopped to matter to me really... its sheer enjoyment again

Steve: yep it is true indeed. the more you think on how to achieve it the farther it goes from you... !!!

J6UK: well yes indeed that is the case however how to achieve it hmmmm no answer it only comes and goes like a ghost.

I think nothing matters in this regard. We think its cuz of relaxation, concentration, technique and what not... but here is when it came upon me:

I had played 8 frames in a row without a break yes truly that... I was up against a good player the match was tight... went to play after my usual day at work... that is to say I was really tired could even feel that fatigue and low intensity ache in back and shoulder (over-play) hadn't any breaks match pressure (decider) continuous play ... and then after this in-off I got an easy red in the middle and then a brown off its spot ... what happened how did I clear having 4 reds on the table in less than 5 minutes wowwwwww beyond explanation !!! All I can remember is tip was making greater/longer contact with white I could feel it ... nothing else ! how to manipulate it how to achieve it again .... well well now- I am asking too much I know

I've never heard of the GROOVE or the ZONE before but I am pleased to hear that others have the same experiences as myself. Sometimes, like the last time that I played, the first frame I couldn't miss, everything seemed to go in sweetly (for me at my level anyway) and then in the next frame I was back to judder, judder, judder in the jaws. I think to myself "How can two frames be so different" I think that I am doing exactly what I did in the first frame but, I can't be can I.

That's not easy Bluenose. We all want to replicate that form every time we play but we cant... For instance, after writing this thread and posting comments here.. my form has been really bad.. I haven't been playing well lately and wonder how to get back to form, yet again. My problem has been with consistency and that makes me dread more and more every time my form deteriorates... but in this game this i believe is the biggest challenge of all...!!! what to do

Snap you cue! Really, put it around the back of your neck and pull with raged eyes. Preferably cursing, red and frothing from the mouth..
All the greats have done it.

Ha Ha! I've been there and done that, only the once though, sometime during the late eighties I snapped my cue over my knee in frustration. Had to go to B & Q and get a length of threaded rod and do a repair job. It worked well too, that cue lasted me up until 2 years ago. I'm a lot more restrained now and never dwell on a poor shot, I concentrate a lot more now but still find it difficult to understand how one frame can be so different to another and over a period of only 15 minutes or so too!

I just love this forum, great people on here, I visit every day and am learning so much and try to put what I can into practice. Thanks to all the contributors.

I remember years ago I kicked my mates arse 8 nil. When we come out he snapped his cue and chucked it in the car park skip, he was fuming, haha. I myself missed a black off its spot for a clearance a few day back and I did feel like picking the black up and slinging it somewhere, missed it from excitement because it would have been a lovely clearance. Played with another mate who found it hard to talk if he lost, it was over the top, on one occasion he refused to come back with me for the pre arranged drink and dinner, he took it very seriously..
