I do have a few tons in line up practise, but only a few.
They do not come easy for me at all, as my technique seems to get worse when I approach bigger numbers. Up to about 70/80 or so I'm good, after that nerves seem to kick in, technique suffers due to extra excitement...Jesus I get excited over a simple drill, don't even ask what goes on during competitive matches...

Nice one ace for keeping it real! As we know to many people who play like to exaggerate there breaks when they really know, their ability ain't up for it.
Stick at it, one ball at a time.

Japp ace, just like me! When it comes to a tournament I'm totally nervous and my stomack is driving nuts. You almost can't get me off the loo...

If you can control the white comfortable then i would not advise sticking with the line up , it gives too many options on loose positionional play , you should be focused on precise cue ball control .

I thought the progression of the line up is to do the reds sequentially in order to have precise cue ball control?

Its the only way to go! While your at it, could be doing the max. Another one is reds in different sections, in other words pot one red from under the black, under pink, blue, then above blue. so the line could look like 4,4,4,3. Its great because you can really clock up mileage on the white.

I generally use line up to work on my technique and potting consistency. I typically get a century once per practice session, sometimes more, but there are definitely days where the best I can manage is 80-90. So it's definitely not super easy. The primary difference maker for me is generally cue ball control, I would advise against getting too lazy with position as it will hurt you once there are fewer reds to play on. Always ensure you are playing for a specific red and angle to get to the next colour. I also don't count, I just know that generally speaking as long as I make 14 reds and colours that is a century provided there aren't too many blues in the mix.

Also as other pointed out, I'd mix up what you are trying to do. Play for the reds sequentially, try for the max (regardless if you think you can clear it). If there are people on an adjacent table, I'll try to keep the cue ball one side of the table playing everything into one pocket. After spending time doing these things, you'll find making a century (or any line up break) considerably easier.

I used to count my line up breaks but stopped after several hundreds. I now simply try to clear the table and count how many times I missed.
I place the reds differently as well from all between top cushion to blue to all between the blue and the baulk cushion and variations in between.
Blue to baulk cushion is very different and more challenging and a bit above my ability to be honest, damn yellow and green are always in the way.

Thanks to all for your points of view so far!

Very interesting ideas and I will try the next days one or the other. I usually try to play sequentially with focus on the black to get the max. Mostly after 6 reds I loose position so that I have to play on with a pink. Sometimes I enjoy playing around pink with as less movement of the cueball as possible. Gives me much confidence.
The hardest shots for me are the ones when I have to go from blue area back to black to pot it.

If I was you I'd just focus on doing consecutive blacks off the spot. The goals look like this: 10 then 20,50,100. Its not easy and you do need to be determined but the rewards, are massive enjoy

I suppose first shot with a decent angle about three quarter to halfball to get next position over the top cushion? What might be the way to go? Staying on one side of the table if possible or alternating?

Blacks have got me puzzled. I can run the colours, run pinks of its spot and pot long blues but don't give me the black exercise. I have been working hard on my game since last October at least an hour a day or more. Working with The Snooker Gym. Not getting the results I am looking for with only a high break of 31 and most matches I make a red and color and then I am way out of position, I guess that's why I cannot run blacks. I have booked 3 hours with Terry Davidson tomorrow hopefully he can set me on the right path.

Maybe, good luck.. Ask Terry the most black's he's run and how long it took, then ask him to show you how to do it

It sounds so easy when someone says run some blacks. I get through a few and I am so far out position the Rocket couldn't couldn't get get the cue ball back in position...lol well maybe he could after watching for the past two weeks.

Havn't done any black routines for a long time now, think my best was around 40, most times more like 15 lol, nice when it all goes right
