  • Snooker Book

    Hi
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is what might be classed as the definitive snooker coaching/tips/technique book ?
    Thanks
    Smee

How i play snooker by Joe Davis might be considered to be one. However, if it's coaching material you're after, forget books and have a good browse on youtube

        http://www.dunns-cues.com/snooker%20...%20better.html

If you go to this link and click successful snooker at the bottom of the page that isn't a half bad read and it's free.

Otherwise Frank Callans book is good - or Stephen Hendry's snooker master class which is rarely mentioned

there is no 'definitive' book as they all cover the same basics in a slightly different way using slightly different words, just like different coaches would do and no one book will advance your game any more than another as only table time and practice and playing better players can do that noticeably

but books are worth a read as you can learn and pick up ideas when you're not at a table and they can give you motivation and plans for your practice and play

if you look on ebay you can probably pick up 'improve your snooker' by clive everton, 'the complete book of snooker' by eddie Charlton and 'teach yourself snooker' by john spencer all for less than an hours table time delivered, which is silly money

i'm not saying they're the best but they're good enough as are many others, with second hand books being so cheap on ebay just buy a few and make your own mind up but nothing replaces table time, though the books will give you ideas for solo practice, I know it worked for me

            +1 sberry, good post..

To maximize potential it takes patience, practice and dedication. And some.

Many of the old players wrote instruction books. Pity none of the modern day players haven't.

These also pop up fairly regularly:

How to play Snooker - Rex Williams
              Tackle Snooker - John Pulman
Snooker, Billiards and Pool - Horace Lindrum

When i was 12 i booked out 'complete snooker' by joe davis from the library, and ive still got it 33 years later (some fees due there i recon). within 3 years i had made a 75 break. The only book ive ever needed to read on snooker in my opinion, i have looked at newer ones and watched videos and they dont appear to teach you anything different to this, mine is the yellow 1974 version which incorporates another one of his books.

Videos are obviously easier to grasp now

I think Steve Davis did have a book out in his early years.

I know the book. I think its "How I Play Snooker" and "Advanced Snooker" combined, isn't it? Joe had about 6 books published by H.W.Allen (I think) and they are all excellent. Just goes to show how revolutionary he was. He basically invented snooker as we know it and not that much has changed since. Players stand more square on now than what Joe did but otherwise, the positional shots and safety he wrote about are the same shots employed by todays top players.

I have a book called JUST ONE FRAME BY DAVID JENNER it is not so much a instruction book more of a progressive log with instructions, where you can log all your routines each section has a particular aim in mind, Center ball striking,Black off the spot,Corrective black, e,c,t, Type title into Google and see what you think its a bit expensive but I use it and think it has been a great help.

Iv heard of most of the books mentioned but never really got my head down to reading any of them.. For me, I served my apprenticeship by being bashed-up week in week out by the local pro's. It forced me to find the middle of the white

Joe Davis two-in-one book is very good.
Cliff Thorburn's "snooker skills" is also very good and is probably my favorite.
                          Hendry's masterclass is good.
Steve Davis "how I play snooker" is worth getting.
Finally I also enjoyed Ray Reardon's "classic snooker" and it has a little section with diagrams on how to escape/lay various tricky snookers.

Found the Steve Davis book I mentioned earlier, Successful Snooker (1982) with World of Sport not seen any reviews though
