  • Lateral movement in forward swing

    More advise needed.

I took a front view video of me cueing a straight blue into the middle pocket. I am left handed.

I noticed that on my forward swing, particularly at the end part of the forward swing, my right cueing hand moves/drops to the right slightly. This causes my cue to not finish on the same straight line at the start of the shot, but angled to the left slightly. It's a bad habit, and I believe it's a common problem.

I have told myself to remember to push my right hand straight to my chest and not let it drop out to the right. But is this all that needs to be done? Is this problem/bad habit a symptom of some other problem?

Thanks for any advise or feedback on this.

If this occurs well after you hit the cueball then it's not a problem. If it occurs at the time of strike or before then it's a serious problem and is caused by you tightening the grip prematurely during the delivery.

Another cause may be a crooked backswing and your brain trying to corect that during the more dynamic delivery.

So, slow down your backswing and loosen your grip and keep the grip loose until after you've struck the cueball and the problem will be solved.

The aim in being a cueist is to keep the cue on a straight line, all the way through the shot, from start to finish! So on the contrary, it is a problem
There could be ah a few things going on here: the chest, bridge, balance, so called grip.. Its all the basics so, don't worry, we've all been there
I recommend you get on the baulk line and do the match box. enjoy

Thanks for the feedback and advise guys.

Terry - Will slow down my backswing, and hold the cue lighter. I watched a front view video I took of myself, and the slight lateral movement of grip to right is at, maybe slightly after, point of contact.

j6uk - But I agree with you, I would like to keep it straight all the way. Which is why I love watching Barry Hawkins cue. Everything is so perfectly straight!

chrissmall147 - in cueing position, and during cueing, my cue does make contact with my chest, just at/slightly above right nipple.

Iv sat by the table and watched Barry play and he has a precision cue action. Tip to cue ball, chest to cue, then lightly wraps the eye of his hand around the cue and, all from the elbow. Great to watch.
